Achievement Completion: 100% In a few words? Repetitive, grind heavy, and a spark of fun that's only temporary. What an... experience? Now, you might be thinking to yourself why someone with 90 hours in this game and 100% achievements wouldn't recommend this game, and I'll get to it, but let's summarize the game really quickly: This is a story about seeking some answers after your friend met their end in some shady alley and while you were nearly a lost cause, you were saved by being transformed into something just like your attacker, a Shadow Soul, burning up in the sunlight should you find (most) of your skin exposed. Now you've been scooped up by an organization, NIRO, to assist them in their pursuit of these Shadow Souls. In story, there are multiple branches that will lead to multiple endings. Will NIRO prevail? The Shadow Souls conquer? LOVE WINNING ALL??? Ok onto the real stuff: This story kinda sucks and it's very predictable and doesn't really stick well for either ending, not even the joke ending. It's not really inspiring and it feels like the concept came first before the story and that's fine, but it just shows at some key points in the story. The combat is very flat with very little amounts of skill expression in it and absolutely zero flair, with the only displays of skill being your reaction time and/or how quickly you can mash buttons to strip your enemies. Overall, it's just not enjoyable once you've mastered the combat after only just a few battles. The most difficult things this game can throw at you aside from the difficulty changes are just one-man-army type battles where you defeat 30 enemies at a specified location. On the topic of these battles, if you're not prepared for them, especially when you are playing on higher difficulties, the flaws in the combat will rear its ugly head and make you feel the most helpless you will ever feel when fighting enemies because hoo boy is it easy to find yourself getting kicked around and stripped before you have a chance to do anything meaningful. Now, of course, these battles are optional and given to you via some guy as optional side quests, some of which can allow you to achieve certain special dialogue or are necessary for an ending. When you aren't doing these specific side quests, you can choose to do other jobs and they're about as exciting as one can imagine, so you can take your pick between either running an errand or just going to a place and beating up someone, oooooooorrrr you can take the high road and do one of those aforementioned horde battles. Now, for my fellow achievement hunters: Otaku and the prized Holic mode aren't *hard* they're just... different and pretty cash intensive. Every time you go through the rounds and enter another NG+ cycle in Akiba you're going to find your levels stripped and your cash donated to charity every single time, but what that means (and boy will you learn) is that your common bully on the street will turn into a nightmare fight if you haven't fully locked in the flow of combat yet, and every single attack you do will feel like slapping 'em with a wet pool noodle given as they have much higher defense on their clothing and aside from the fact that you can have a +99 weapon/piece of clothing, it won't matter too much in the scheme of things if your level is so low as it will be in the start. If you can power through the initial encounters to start getting some levels under your belt is when you will snowball to a more comfortable position and be able to take a few hits and dish out the pain you need to. If you really wanna go the whole nine yards with this game and the achievements, know that you'll have to constantly spam level ups on your equipment and have around 13-16 pieces of clothing per article you wish to fully max out to +999, it's just really unfortunate that the way to upgrade your stuff is so tedious and exhausting if you're doing it the straight and narrow way, but my strategy was to get whatever clothes I wanted to convert into the premium Kai upgrade material, go to Holic mode and then just sell the clothes, leave via the station and end the playthrough, returning to any other difficulty then complete the arena for some quick n' easy cash. Your weapons and clothing should be at a healthy upgrade level to survive long enough and if not, then you can always stock up on sunscreen which will give you 30s of delayed death every time you use it so spam it to your heart's content. Final thoughts? If you want a game to laugh at and don't wanna take it seriously, this is a game that you can definitely just do a one-off playthrough of. Stripping people is funny and the story isn't really engaging, so it's not like you'll find yourself too invested unless you really pay attention.
Ear-killing volume until you pass/skip the intro (no main menu volume controls) and unplayable controller issues on some dinput controllers (including but not limited to PS5/SixSense) even though the store pade claims full controller support for detected controllers. Reported when the game launched in 2021 but never fixed.
