Best RTS game I have played.
Played bad as a kid, had fun. Purchase and play game as an adult, still bad, still fun.
The complete AoE series belongs to the IPs worthy to be preserved and played on. In its genre it laid a framework with the same importance like Monopoly, chess or reversi among tabletop games. RTS is a genre that has passed the golden age long ago, around the early 2000s. It started with Dune II that laid the foundations. Then it grew massive, thanks to WarCraft, StarCraft, AoE, Command & Conquer / Red Alert, Total Annihilation, Warhammer or some more abstact ones like Homeworld or Imperium Galactica. In my opinon the era was closed by StarCraft II as it was the last game of its kind with a massive playerbase. There are some pretty great games coming out after that like later Total War titles but the massive playerbase of the 2000s is gone. Sharing the crown with StarCraft, AoE II was maybe the most legendary and perhaps one of the most successful among all of them. The later titles have many quality of life changes while this one inherited quite a lot of the clunkiness of the very first AoE. Some love it for that, some don't. About the Definitive Edition, an ample of ehnancements and content became added, compared to the Age of Kings CD I have from 2000-something. I have no idea if it works, I don't even have a CD-ROM anymore. That's why I have this update. It works just fine. The fact that it is an old core desing means it has flaws. Depending on the map and scenario it may take several hours, some scenarios are very tedious and without unit-level battlefield micromanagement on higher difficulty levels that is very difficult to do as the game doesn't offer much to keep things under control, almost impossible, even if you understand all the game dynamics well. But that belongs to the beauty of it. Like an older car: no ABS, no tempomat, no steering assist. Everything is a manual / mechanical task, some can be pretty hard. Some love it, some hate it.
nice game!
