Super Meatboy meets Portal. Don't let the rudimentary presentation fool you, the gameplay is addictive and the levels are well thought out and challenging, especially the later levels that will really get your gnoggin' joggin.
2.5/10 no mistakes can be made at all solve the puzzle mentally but you tapped the tip of that thing and now you need to fully reset everything....annoying the amount of times i played levels over again because of just the tip - cant rebind controls - i got a C time rank every single level i played, but the 1st one that only has 2 jumps. what the hell does it take to not get the lowest time rank? only micro 0.4 amounts of time i could have shaved off on a few of those levels + only 5$
-If you like fast short levels and a mistake or reset wont take you back 30 minutes in progress, this game is for you! -If you like speedrunning but don't have the time or will to learn hour long games, this game is for you! -If you like to dabble around in a game for 15-20 minutes at a time but still feel like getting a lot done, this game is for you!
Top notch puzzle platformer, obviously inspired by Kubinashi Recollection, but Afterlife Reverie more than earns the right to be called, if nothing else, "The other puzzle platformer that is actually good other than Kubinashi." A wide array of puzzle platforming challenges demanding quick execution and out of the box thinking in equal measure. The game is a one-man show and it shows between all the jank but the gameplay and heart shines through.
Afterlife Reverie, developed and published by Nuclear Raven Games, is a captivating 2D puzzle platformer that weaves together thoughtful gameplay, a mysterious storyline, and inventive mechanics. Players take on the role of an amnesiac spirit trapped in the Underworld, striving to piece together her forgotten past while navigating a realm filled with challenges set by Izanami, the goddess of death. This premise sets a tone of both melancholy and determination, driving the player forward through atmospheric environments steeped in themes of identity, loss, and redemption. The game unfolds across seven intricately designed worlds, each containing five levels that escalate in difficulty and complexity. What truly distinguishes Afterlife Reverie is its clever use of the "Spirit Gate" mechanic, which lets players place checkpoints that they can return to at will. This system not only encourages experimentation but also rewards strategic thinking, as players learn to master timing, positioning, and puzzle-solving under pressure. The fluid controls and precise platforming complement this, offering a gameplay experience that feels both fair and challenging, striking a fine balance that keeps players engaged without overwhelming them. Another compelling feature is the spirit’s ability to possess different humanoid forms, such as a scarecrow, each bringing unique abilities that unlock new ways to interact with the environment. This possession mechanic adds depth and variety, requiring players to think creatively and adapt their strategies based on the abilities available in each form. It also enriches the exploration aspect of the game, as different forms can access areas and solve puzzles inaccessible to others, creating a layered and immersive experience. Narratively, Afterlife Reverie gradually reveals the spirit’s backstory and her relationship with Izanami, creating an emotional resonance that underpins the gameplay. The story’s slow unveiling invites players to invest in the character’s journey toward self-discovery and redemption, making the challenges faced feel meaningful beyond just mechanical hurdles. The game’s art style complements this mood perfectly—ethereal, moody, and thoughtfully detailed—while the soundtrack enhances the haunting atmosphere, together crafting a cohesive and immersive world that lingers in the player’s mind. Beyond the main levels, the game offers additional layers of engagement through its ranking system, encouraging players to aim for S ranks by completing levels efficiently and collecting hidden photobook scraps. These collectibles unlock new wardrobe options for the spirit, adding a personalized touch and rewarding exploration and skillful play. The inclusion of 35 Steam achievements further incentivizes players to push their limits and fully explore the game’s mechanics. While Afterlife Reverie is still somewhat under the radar in the wider gaming community, it has earned praise for its innovative design and emotional depth. It stands out as a thoughtful and carefully crafted indie title that offers both a challenging platforming experience and a compelling narrative journey. Its combination of unique gameplay mechanics and atmospheric storytelling makes it a memorable entry in the puzzle platformer genre. Overall, Afterlife Reverie is a richly layered game that rewards players who appreciate thoughtful challenges and meaningful narratives. Its blend of precise platforming, inventive possession mechanics, and evocative story create an experience that is both mentally stimulating and emotionally engaging. For anyone intrigued by the concept of exploring the afterlife through the eyes of a lost spirit, this game offers a haunting and rewarding adventure well worth diving into. Rating: 6/10
Dear developer, well done for making a game & getting it up on Steam. I'm glad to hear that you are continuing to improve your art skills. Keep going. Don't let your memes be dreams. This game isn't really my cup of tea, but please don't be discouraged. You will no doubt learn a lot from this project & continue to improve, so please keep making things.
Great puzzle platformer where you either melt your brain to solve puzzles or melt your brain to skip said puzzles. Also world 6 is where hope goes to die.
This guy lulled me with a discount on a already cheap game, into becoming the guy that stress tested his levels. It was quite the arduous journey but I came out on top. PS: I'm checking out the video on the storepage & I'm not used to seeing the game run that smoothly.
Not really a fan of puzzlers or platformers but this game is genuinely fun even for me
sadly not my style of game going in blind. an extraordinary amount of polish and effort than what i had expected. fairly challenging puzzle platformer, focus on time trails of what i tried.
