Very nice puzzle game! While a couple of puzzles (namely #25 and #29) have... Let's say, questionable logic behind them, the game leaves a very pleasant impression nonetheless. If you are into puzzle games - a must buy!
My score: 6/10 ⭐ TL;DR: A slightly improved version of its predecessor with a light escape-room flavor, but still too short, too easy, and too forgettable. 🟥 NOTE: Despite featuring many color-based puzzles, the game does not seem to include any colorblind accessibility options.
Overview
Slightly longer, slightly harder, slightly better than its 2016 predecessor (🔗read my review here). This one comes with a vague escape-room theme and a shy Portal-esque storyline, which is nothing special but at least helps tie the experience together by giving the puzzles some context and purpose.
One Thing I Liked / One Thing I Didn’t
✔️ Liked: You can actually move around the room and solve puzzles like, you know... in an actual escape room. ✖️ Didn’t: It’s still too easy, too generic, and way too brief.
Key Points
[*]
DIFFICULTY:
With attentive observation and just a tiny bit of lateral thinking, it’s a breeze. [*]
PRESENTATION:
Solid, simple, effective. There’s also a slight cyberpunk flavor here and there, which is always a plus for me at least. [*]
STORY:
There’s a timid attempt at worldbuilding and an NPC that briefs you (aka lore-dumps at you) between puzzles. It ain’t no GLaDOS, but at least it gives the game some purpose. [*]
GAMEPLAY/GAMEPLAY LOOP:
Standard puzzle solving and environmental interaction, with a stronger escape-room feel compared to the previous game. [*]
TECHNICAL POLISH:
No glitches or bugs detected. [*]
MONEYxCONTENT VALUE:
Although roughly twice as long as its predecessor, it’s still a very short experience. Wait for a discount.
While not an awful game by any means, I found some of the puzzles just too vague or obtuse. This is quite possibly because I am not in tune with the mind of the developer or do not grasp some logic concepts immediately. Most of the game is honestly quite nice, and admittedly quite weak story at least held my interest. Unfortunately, stuff like having to turn my head to look at puzzle information or to manipulate a second object were kind of distracting. The screwdriver felt entirely unnecessary as its main function was uncovering plates that... could have just been off to begin with or allowed you to use the tools already there on the table. As said, a couple of puzzles just completely stonewalled me and even after looking at the hints in-game I was sometimes going "..what?" I suspect the developer must have realized this, as well, because shockingly a few hints are just flat-out the solution to the puzzle. One late puzzle involves a trap, and I do not know how you're supposed to figure it out; I simply blundered into the solution by misclicking in the room and something happened. That isn't to say I hated the game, I think a lot of it was neat and had fun, but I had enough moments of genuine confusion that I'm leaning on a No. Please do take it with a grain of salt, you might love it but it did not impress me the way I'd hoped. I think I was somehow under the impression it'd be more like.. I dunno, The Room or something.
An hours worth of uncreative repetitive puzzles that offer little challenge or variety. The AI art adds an additional bit of insult to injury.
Another great bite-sized puzzle game. It iterates on the ideas of the first Access Denied just enough so it feels fresh while still scratching that same itch. Very easy to recommend.
