Small but beautiful that makes you appreciate your grandmother more <3
I guess we all had something in our eyes while playing this
A sweet and very simple game, doesn't take long to play, but at the price it is a very good and emotional story, that got me teary eyed.
ended up calling my dad after finally playing this, have had it on my backlog for a while now and i think i was honestly too afraid to play knowing i would feel guilty for not reaching out to my family as much as i should. i finally got that push and i'm grateful for it. it was a clunky and awkward call, i asked how my grandparents were doing and ended up scheduling a time to visit them early next year. every family isn't perfect, i'm not particularly close with mine but i still care. yiayia really makes it known you should show that you care. i can't wait to see my grandmother next year (:
A Walk With Yiayia, developed and published by Trent Garlipp, is a quiet, heartfelt interactive story that captures the essence of intergenerational connection, healing, and companionship. It is a deeply personal experience inspired by real-life walks the developer took with his grandmother after she suffered a fall that left her fearful of going outside again. This foundation of sincerity shapes every part of the game, from its minimalist design to its emotional pacing. Rather than presenting itself as a traditional video game with goals and challenges, it invites players to slow down, reflect, and take a peaceful stroll with someone they love. The result is an intimate exploration of empathy and understanding, told not through spectacle but through the subtleties of everyday life. The story unfolds over the course of a single walk through a quiet neighborhood as you accompany your Greek grandmother—Yiayia—on her first trip outside since her accident. What follows is a simple yet moving journey filled with small conversations, gentle observations, and moments of tenderness that gradually reveal the bond between the two characters. As you walk, Yiayia opens up about her memories, her fears, and her hopes, and you in turn learn how to balance care with respect for her independence. The narrative touches on themes of aging, cultural identity, and familial responsibility without ever feeling heavy-handed. It manages to find meaning in the ordinary—in the rhythm of footsteps, the passing of time, and the warmth of shared silence. For players who have ever cared for an aging relative or watched someone they love grow fragile, the story resonates on a deeply human level. Visually, A Walk With Yiayia adopts a minimalist pixel-art style that suits its contemplative tone. The neighborhood is rendered in soft colors and simple shapes, exuding a sense of familiarity and comfort. The design avoids unnecessary detail, allowing players to focus on the emotional interplay between the characters and the gentle flow of the walk. The camera moves slowly and deliberately, reinforcing the sense of patience and care. Every visual element feels chosen to encourage mindfulness—the flicker of sunlight across the pavement, the sway of leaves in the wind, and the slow shuffle of Yiayia’s steps all work together to create an atmosphere of calm reflection. The soundtrack complements this perfectly, with soft piano melodies and ambient sounds of birds and distant chatter that envelop the player in a sense of peace. Gameplay is deliberately simple, reflecting the game’s focus on connection over action. You guide Yiayia along the path, occasionally stopping to interact with the environment or respond to small prompts that open up dialogue. There are no fail states, no time limits, and no pressure to rush. The joy lies in the journey itself—listening, observing, and moving at Yiayia’s pace. Through small interactions, such as helping her pick up a dropped object or pausing to admire the flowers, the game reveals how acts of care can be both mundane and profound. The writing is understated yet powerful, filled with moments that feel authentic and unscripted. It captures the cadences of real conversation—hesitations, repetitions, and small digressions that make the dialogue feel natural and lived-in. What makes A Walk With Yiayia particularly effective is its understanding of emotional restraint. It doesn’t force its themes on the player or rely on melodrama to convey its message. Instead, it allows emotion to emerge naturally through the pacing and tone of the experience. The game doesn’t aim to entertain in the conventional sense; it aims to connect. By the end of the walk, players often find themselves reflecting on their own family relationships, the passage of time, and the quiet beauty of being present for someone else. In this way, the game transcends its short runtime, leaving a lingering sense of warmth and melancholy that stays with you long after it ends. At the same time, its brevity may surprise players expecting a more expansive experience. The entire game can be completed in under an hour, and mechanically it offers little beyond walking and conversation. Yet this simplicity is not a flaw but a deliberate choice. The game’s short length mirrors the fleeting nature of the moments it portrays—small but meaningful, fragile yet lasting. Its lack of complexity allows players to focus on emotional nuance rather than mechanical mastery. It’s a reminder that games, like stories, can be quiet and still powerful, existing not to challenge reflexes but to stir empathy. A Walk With Yiayia is a testament to the growing potential of indie games to tell deeply personal stories that transcend language and culture. Its charm lies in its honesty—it doesn’t try to be more than it is, and that humility makes it shine. For players seeking bombastic action or complex systems, it may feel too minimal, but for those open to reflection and emotion, it offers a profoundly human experience. Trent Garlipp’s debut demonstrates that games can serve as vessels for memory and compassion, preserving the warmth of human connection in digital form. It’s not just a walk through a neighborhood; it’s a walk through love, memory, and the quiet act of caring for someone who once cared for you. Rating: 9/10
"A Walk With Yiayia" is a heartfelt solo-developed, bite-sized adventure game about taking your Greek grandmother on a walk after she's lost her confidence from a scary fall. You connect through engaging conversations, explore a relaxing environment, and complete microquests in this. I liked the sounds and the soundtrack of the game. The game is in a pixel-style which gave it a bit more of old-time vibes which was really fitting. In generell the game was pretty atmospheric. I played the game for a total of 2.3 houres, with one playthrough. The game itself did cost me 1.27€, it was on sale but i would have bought it for the whole price tho. Try it out i think it is worth it!
Cortito y muy bonito!
Sencillo y tierno.
Lovely indie game with a unique black and white pixelart style and a simple yet emotional story about family and ageing.
