8, developed and published by Thales Caus, is a compact yet remarkably thoughtful indie RPG that blends classic adventure design, turn-based tactical combat, and meaningful narrative choice into a tightly focused experience. Rather than chasing scale or spectacle, the game emphasizes intention and consequence, inviting players into a medieval fantasy world where every action, conversation, and battle decision carries weight. Its design feels deliberately old-school in spirit, but it applies those foundations with a modern understanding of pacing, player agency, and narrative cohesion. The game unfolds primarily through exploration and interaction, adopting an approach that feels closer to classic point-and-click adventures than to sprawling open-world RPGs. You move through carefully constructed environments, examine details, speak with characters, and manage your inventory with a sense that information itself is a resource. Progress often depends not just on combat prowess, but on observation, dialogue choices, and how you interpret the world around you. This creates a slower, more contemplative rhythm that encourages players to think before acting, reinforcing the game’s focus on deliberate decision-making. Combat in 8 is turn-based and tactical, designed to reward preparation rather than brute force. Encounters require careful use of abilities, items, and positioning, and enemies are structured to challenge careless approaches. While the system is not overly complex, it is consistently engaging, as each battle feels like a small puzzle rather than a routine obstacle. Success often hinges on understanding enemy behavior and managing limited resources effectively, giving combat a sense of tension that persists throughout the game. One of the most defining aspects of 8 is its morality and choice system. The game frequently presents situations where the “right” choice is unclear, pushing players to act based on personal judgment rather than explicit guidance. These decisions influence character relationships, alter dialogue, and shape the direction of the narrative in meaningful ways. Rather than offering a simple good-versus-evil binary, the game allows for moral ambiguity, making its world feel more grounded and its outcomes more personal. This system also encourages replayability, as different choices can lead to noticeably different experiences. Narratively, 8 focuses on atmosphere and implication rather than constant exposition. The story unfolds organically through interactions and discoveries, allowing players to piece together the larger picture at their own pace. This restrained storytelling approach complements the game’s mechanics, as it avoids overwhelming the player with lore while still providing enough context to make the world feel cohesive and alive. Characters are written with subtlety, and even minor NPCs often feel purposeful within the broader narrative framework. Visually, the game adopts a modest but effective aesthetic that balances anime-inspired character art with a more traditional RPG presentation. While it does not aim for high-end graphical fidelity, its visuals are consistent and expressive, clearly communicating mood and intent. The interface is clean and functional, prioritizing clarity and ease of use, which is especially important given the game’s reliance on inventory management and dialogue-driven progression. Sound design and music are understated, supporting the atmosphere without dominating it. The game’s scope is intentionally limited, which may be noticeable to players accustomed to expansive worlds or endless side content. Environments are compact, and progression follows a relatively linear structure. However, this limitation works in the game’s favor, allowing it to maintain focus and avoid filler. The experience feels curated rather than padded, respecting the player’s time while still offering depth through its systems and choices. Ultimately, 8 stands out as a carefully crafted indie RPG that values substance over scale. Its blend of exploration, tactical combat, and morally driven storytelling creates an experience that feels cohesive and purposeful from start to finish. For players who appreciate classic RPG sensibilities, meaningful decision-making, and a slower, more thoughtful pace, 8 offers a rewarding journey that proves impactful design does not require grandiosity. It is a game that lingers not because of how much it shows, but because of how thoughtfully it asks the player to engage. Rating: 6/10
