1990 is an adventure game / RPG that appears to be a passion project of either a solo developer or a very small team. My first playthrough which included reading all of the text and accessing any areas that seemed accessible took about 2 and a half hours. I didn't have to reload from a save at any point for any reason. It's 2D and does not scroll. Everything occurs on a single screen with a brief loading period between screens. Combat is turn-based and what you'd expect for a classic turn-based RPG. Graphics / Sound This game has very, very basic graphics. Similar to something you'd expect from 30 years ago but most of the environments repeat too often. It wasn't uncommon for me to have to think about if I was going the correct way through the game simply because many of the screens repeat. The characters and enemies look better both in the environment and the battle screens, but none of them are exceptional. The music is forgetable. Neither the music or sound effects are great, but at least they didn't annoy me. (6/10) Story / Lore / Character Building I didn't catch any grammatical errors or horrific translations. The story at least makes sense, even if it is quite cheesy and basic. The ending is one of the oldest, most tiresome tropes, but it at least makes sense. The story might keep a young child interested, but it is unlikely to pull in an adult. You really don't get to know much about the characters in the game except for the antagonist and even then, it's still unclear why he is stirring up all of this trouble. It's passable but particularly good. (9/15) Gameplay Mechanics / Controls / Miscellaneous The gameplay mechanics are simple. Move using arrow keys or WASD. If you run into an enemy, you go into a battle screen. You leave each single screen by using a door. Spacebar is the action button. Combat involves the typical management of HP and SP, both of which are completely replenished upon level up or by getting a room at a hotel. As you get more characters (especially the healer), it is important to ensure you do not run out of SP or else later fights can be stressful. Otherwise, the battles themselves are fairly easy, requiring only basic strategy. There is level scaling. The final boss fight did require a brief period of revising my strategy given I almost got my entire group wiped. It's a fairly easy game to play, controls are responsive, and it was relatively fun for a single playthrough. There's no reason for me to replay it. For a free game, it's an excellent value. (15/25) FINAL SCORE: 3 / 5 - Borderline recommend. If this cost more than $3, it would be not recommended. The developer shows basic mastery of constructing a basic RPG here. I hope they continue to refine their craft because there's seemingly a lot of potential to offer.
