Yeti Ski

I have fond memories of watching Ski Sunday with my family when it was broadcasted many years ago. There was nothing much on TV on a Sunday. The day almost felt like a punishment because it was so boring but it got us outside playing on our bikes and mixing with human beings I suppose. In the evening, we would come in, have a roast dinner and watch people hurtling down a hillside for our enjoyment. Great times. For this reason, whenever a skiing game pops its head up, it piques my interest (no pun intended). [h2] Yeti Ski is a very basic arcade skiing game which can be fun for an hour or so, but it suffers from repetition and the feeling that it is just a little too basic. [/h2] [h2] Game Play [/h2] There are two modes to try out - Freestyle and Slalom. Freestyle is where you need to avoid obstacles like trees and rocks and perform tricks on jumps. The sort of tricks you can perform are back flips, front flips, and side flips, and there are large jumps and small jumps, with the smaller jumps allowing you to do multiple tricks in the air, if you so dare. Slalom allows you to go one side of a gate and then the other side of a subsequent gate. You’re not allowed to touch the gate for some reason which is a bit odd because they batter the living daylights out of the gates in real life. With both freestyle and slalom, you get an initial run and then it starts in endless mode where you carry on the gameplay but are now just looking to build up your scores so that you can earn some achievements and compete on global leaderboards. In the endless part, after a while, a yeti will start chasing you and if he captures you, it is the end of the run. There is a kind of boost button which allows you to outrun the yeti but the extra speed injects more jeopardy as you dodge obstacles at high speed. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3478652187 [h2] Conclusion [/h2] The game feels a little basic but it still manages to deliver some fun, especially if you like to compete on leader boards or earn achievements, and these will be the driving force behind longevity. The graphics are very bland and menus feel minimal and entry level. I am sure these could be spruced up a little with more bells and whistles. For example, if a Yeti starts chasing you down the mountain, change the music to something more sinister or dramatic. If you get a high score let us know we have done well with a bit of fanfare. It would be nice if the leader boards were housed within the game rather than be transported to a thread within Steam, and maybe some sound effects when jumping would be appreciated. It is just things like this that give the game a very bare bones feel. The good news is that the control system is fairly decent and you can use either keyboard or gamepad. It is a little strange that the skier can move dead horizontally because surely that is an impossibility, but otherwise the skier moves quite smoothly and the gravity element of speeding up and slowing down felt realistic. The slalom run felt a little too easy to complete and once you finished the slalom run, it turned into a freestyle run, so it seemed a little pointless. The game isn’t very expensive but I still think it is probably over-priced for the content on offer, and although there is an hour of entertainment here, I would only recommend this to people who enjoy achievements and chasing high scores, which I do.
