I recently bought WRC Generations as my latest rally title, and unfortunately it turned out to be a disappointment.

[*]Runs flawlessly on Linux via Valve Proton – smooth, responsive, no stutters.
[*]The graphics are genuinely good. Cars look great and stages are visually appealing.

And that’s about where the positives end.
[h3] The Problems [/h3]

[*]A rally game should be about driving – mastering different surfaces, pushing your limits, and feeling motivated to increase the difficulty to challenge yourself. This game misses that core essence. Instead, you're forced into a strange and unnecessary calendar system full of meaningless “activities” – resting, team events, random management clicks. It feels like busywork. Why do I need to manage fictional mechanics? What are these random points even for? It adds nothing to the driving experience and only creates extra mandatory clicks.
[*]The stages and cars feel recycled from previous versions. There’s little sense of freshness.
[*]After every stage, there’s a message saying the server is unavailable. Very useful information in a single-player rally run.
[*]And when you exit the game, it suggests returning to Windows. I’ve never used Windows as my primary OS, so this is just bizarre. It adds no value and certainly no license.
[*]Another major issue: the forced progression. I don’t want to grind through junior cars just to unlock something else. Car unlock systems have never made rally games better. I just want to rally once a week and enjoy driving — not manage progression trees. Older titles even had fun experimental vehicles (like the Ford Transit van stage challenges in older games). Those were memorable. This isn’t.
[*]What’s most disappointing is that the driving physics seem to get worse with each version. WRC 4–6 felt more responsive and enjoyable. Here, the handling feels less engaging and less precise.

It’s unfortunate that retail versions usually can’t be refunded, because this game is, frankly, boring.
[b] Great visuals, solid Proton support — but fundamentally missing the joy of rally driving. [/b]
