Word Worm is a mixture of a word search puzzle and a crossword in the sense that you need to know the answer before you can search for it. There are no clues like in a crossword but you do get given a very cryptic general clue that sets the theme for all the answers. For example, "Mouse Ears" was a list of Disney films! The list of the answers are blanked out and displayed above so at least you know how many letters are in each word or words. Another big clue, which my partner pointed out, is that the answers are in alphabetical order which actually really helps because the words can only start with one of four letters so that is a good way of ruling some letters out. You start off with only the four letters to the right, left, above, and below the worm and all words must originate from one of these four letters. Once you press a letter it reveals the letters around it, so initially, unless you have an inkling of what an answer may be from the general clue, then you are trying to find a sensible path to an answer. This adds an extra layer of challenge to proceedings and you can often start off and end up at a dead end. If a word goes wrong then those letters are counted as wasted letters. There's no penalty for wasted letters, and you can have as many as you want, but there are certain achievements linked to not having any wasted letters. A little cheat that I found was that you can reveal all the letters in the grid and just go back to the main menu and pick the same set again and they will stay revealed without any penalty. I'm sure that's probably a bug but it did help in certain situations. The initial grid where the four letters only are shown is where you are more than likely going to hit a wrong letter and I wish there was some kind of undo button to stop this happening because I found that part quite frustrating. There's also a chance that you can accidentally hit a letter you don't want to and there is no way of correcting that mistake. The general clues are also a bit annoying because they often lead you down the wrong chain of thought and because initially you are in the dark, that can be annoying too. I don't see why the clues have to be so cryptic. Just say they are wines or Disney films. If you are stuck for answers then there is an unlimited clue button, with no cool down, that you can use that reveals a letter from a random word left to find. So, you can spam this until it reveals the whole word if you like. Personally, instead of choosing a random letter from any of the words left to find, I would have preferred it to reveal the first letter in a word, and then reveal the second letter in that word etc. I found that I was using the hint button too much because it kept revealing the fifth letter in a word for example and I only wanted to know what it started with. The same tune plays throughout the game and I was wishing that it would change because it can get annoying and the grid is quite bland and washed out and although functional, looks a bit ugly.
🍳Conclusion🍳

Word Worm is quite a neat idea and is very challenging to complete without any mistakes. There's a few minor gripes I had with the game but generally it is an original concept which works. People who like crosswords more than word searches will appreciate this more because a lot of trivia is needed to know the answers. There's probably around six hours of content here so it is good value for money and if you enjoy word games it's definitely worth giving this a go.

Thank you for reading my review. A really absorbing cute little puzzler, highly recommended for fans of NYT-style word puzzle games.
Thanks to this hungry little worm fella, I learnt about a type of tree I'd never heard of. Highly recommend for those who love a good puzzle. Now I just need to go find a garbage bag for all these wasted letters.
For the asking price, this is an absolute steal of a game. Its a very good puzzler that engages in lateral thinking, similar to a New York Times style of crossword puzzle or any cryptic clue game. I will say I have only played a little of this game so far, but what I have seen I like, and it is a good game to play with another person to brain storm aloud. That said, it is tricky if you have never encountered a word before (e.g. a particular variety of animal, tree, or concept). I hope more people give this fun little puzzle game a try. Its cheap, its fun, its engaging, and most importantly to me, its family night friendly. EDIT: I love this game. Since this review, I have swapped from Windows 10 to a Linux distro. It is not Linux compatable. It will not launch on a Linux Desktop. Do not buy if you plan on using Linux OS (tested with Fedora). It is Steam Deck Compatable though! Streaming to your PC via Steam Deck does not work though, lol.
find words in a grid, matching the theme. the number of words and their length are provided hangman-style. wish it had numbers in brackets as well, so _____ (5) instead of _____. they're not even in any order. obviously alphabetical would be too much but why not length? and there should be an option for bigger letters on top, plenty of room. and more space between columns, longer ones tend to blend together. not all letters are visible initially, an unnecessary restriction. click one to reveal adjacent tiles but pretty soon the whole thing becomes visible and words and paths still have to be found. any combination of letters can be submitted, as long as they start with one next to the worm, not diagonally. doesn't even have to be a word but if it's not on the wanted list, it'll increase the wasted letters counter that does absolutely nothing. no fail state or rating system, it isn't even shown anywhere outside the current stage, and revealed letters don't go back into hiding. unskippable and replayable multi-stage tutorial with a silent typewriter effect. the game is 100% mousable (click letters or hold and drag to highlight more) but it's barely keyboardable. arrows and wasd both work to select letters (the tutorial fails to mention it) but for a while I couldn't submit a word with enter or anything, had to click. why, pray tell, when enter works in the menus? then I tried again a few levels later and enter started working, so at the very least it's buggy. esc does nothing, no pause menu either, can only adjust volumes and windowed mode from the main menu. these are the only settings, the window is mobile-shaped and non-resizable. and since a level can only be quit with the mouse and there are no hotkeys, the keyboard only option under accessibility features on the store page is a lie. letters can't be deselected, another unnecessary and frustrating restriction. one could argue it'd make things easier, reveal a letter, then go back and in another direction, but like I said, the reveal part is very temporary, and why have any functionality at all if they just ruin your perfectly designed game? except there's a hint system (no hotkey once again), so it makes even less sense to limit interactions like this. even though keys can't be held to move more than one tile, controls are too sensitive, so it's very easy to accidentally select the wrong tile and ♥♥♥♥ the whole word up. asking to reveal random letters in the words you're looking for adds to the pointless wasted counter as well. another store page lie is claming there are 'over 60 levels' when there are only 58 grids in 9 packs, with only the first pack available initially. they just about don't fit the screen, looks bad. complete the first pack to unlock the next couple, and so on. not sure why additional clicking/enter is necessary to open them. and another, bigger problem: individual grids can't be selected, nor replayed or even restarted, so effectively the game only has 8 levels, each with multiple parts. once a pack is started, the only way is forward. some packs have a shared theme but there are no mechanics or anything to build on or discover, so not having reset and a basic individual level select, not even after finishing a pack, is unacceptable. progress is saved on exit, don't even have to restart the current grid, so it's both mid-pack and mid-level, which is good (finally something). the progress bar on top is just that, a bar filling up, once again missing a simple '3/8' or similar for those who can recognize numbers, not only letters. another baffling decision, as level select has both. the price would be reasonable at 3 eur (rare) and the demo didn't get removed after release (even rarer), but it's so poorly designed (based on what they said about undo in the forum, it's mostly down to incompetence) that it can't be recommended. also, there's very little trivia here, unlike it says on the store page. you're looking for colors, trees, palindromes and whatnot, it's just word search, all about vocab, with some appearing in multiple levels. lazy. only a few levels need songs, movies or characters. if you're looking for something similar but done better and providing more fun, rosette and words is an option.
A really challenging and cute game! Great for fans of classic word search games- it's got very simple controls and a clean minimalist style. I love making the little worm dance when I do a good job :3
Wonderful small game! Very cute, I love the detail of the sound bars being worms c: Perfect if you just want a small puzzle to pass the time or occupy your mind. I would love to see some letters darken as you use them, just to help some folks who approach the game more like a logic puzzle than a word game. Even dyslexic, I had lots of fun! And the game don't make you feel bad if you're real bad at spelling ^u^'
I thoroughly enjoyed playing this game with my hardcarry Bloop Eater. (game was fun but idk why it said director's cut was rly hard... it was actually much easier than some of them) need more!!
🔹 EXPECTATIONS: a scrabble clone. 🔹 REALITY: a mix of trivia and letters soup. 🔶 Word worm (WW) is an interesting mix of trivia, letters soup and riddles. You need to find words on a board from an initial clue (the level's title) but the board only has the 4 initial letters of all words visible at the centre. Only when you select a letter, the adjacent ones are revealed. 🔸 A WW level has 3 stages. 1st you start guessing the topic from the title, like a riddle. 2nd you test your guess carefully, by selecting letters (a commitment because you can't undo), and once the theme is clear, you search for the remaining words. In the 3rd phase, you can find words because they are known to you; otherwise you can deduct them: the number of words and their length is shown at the top, and since they are sorted alphabetically, you can use this information to your advantage. 🔸 The game keeps track of how many letters you 'touch' but don't become a word, like a penalty, but it doesn't affect the gameplay. 🔸 The ideas presented click and work along each other, but the game could have been expanded a little bit more, feeling like it didn't reach all its potential. 🔸 Replaying a level, resets all boards within the group, not just the one you want to replay. And replaying a board repeats the exact same words instead of grabbing a selection from a pool, generating a new board procedurally. This would have given the game a lot more variety and replayability. 🔸 In the end WW is a small game that presents a concept that works, and hopefully it opens the door for the devs to explore it even further. Strongly recommended if you enjoy crosswords or word games. POSITIVES: 🙂+ 😄+ the mix of genres 😍+ NEGATIVES: 🙁- replayability 😠- 😡-
For more puzzle game reviews, news and everything puzzle-related, follow Puzzle Lovers and check out our Steam group.
Recommended. Cute, clean word puzzler with a great thematic touch (the volume slider is a little worm—love it). Early stages use simple English words; later themed packs demand stronger vocabulary. The tutorial is clear and you quickly move into those packs. There’s no French option here, but I’ll keep playing to finish it—the store description is accurate and the loop is satisfying. Disclosure: key provided; opinions are my own. Thanks to the dev for the invite—and for suggesting a game squarely in a style I love.
