I'm afraid that at this point in time, I cannot recommend the game in its current state. The premise is a sound one - you play as a colony of mice, ruled by an upper class depicted as cats. While the cat-mice dichotomy isn't an original idea what with it appearing in several great literary works, it is a stellar metaphor in more ways than one: Not only are the cats fattening themselves off the hard work of your fellow micelings - they are clearly predating on the weaker lower class mice, making a political statement that has held true for not only this time period, but others, as well. This also brings forth the idea that, surely, someday you shall break free from the chains, through the ingenuity of your mice people, parroting cartoons and movies alike. This is also shown in many ways through the game's mechanics as well - your mice have a rebellion stat to them, and the cats will not accept refined goods from your colony as payment, forcing you to not go overboard with industrialisation, lest you find yourself unable to pay your taxes, bringing misery and suffering upon your fellow micelings. All this, is brilliant game design, and I commend the developers for having created a game like this. Unfortunately, this game has a major letdown right now, and is the main reason why this review is a negative one: There is seemingly no way of breaking the chains from your feline overlords. While I am certain this is planned to be something they want to implement down the line, the fact that this is missing means that any colony that attempts to grow to a certain size, or survives more than a year, will inevitably reach a point where there is simply no way of dealing with your overlords. The fact that everything about the game, its design, the entire concept of it, all points towards this, is why I simply cannot recommend the game at this point in time. It also shows that this is something they can't just go about doing like what the later Tropico games did, where they handwaved the independence from the crown by paying a large sum of cash. The game is doing its darndest to make sure that you know that one day, you'll be free from those cats. But it just isn't in the game yet. In some ways, maybe this is a bigger stumble than the lack of such a mechanic - the rest of the game has built this up so much that, if and when they do implement it, people may find themselves sorely disappointed if it does not match the way the game has built up to this. As such, my current recommendation is this: Do keep an eye out for this game if you enjoy a game that, to me, seems to want to mix Tropico with that of Timberborn and similar games. Keep it in your wishlist and see it grow. But right now, I cannot recommend buying it and playing it, because you will become attached to these mice and the colony you have worked so hard to build up together, and you will know that, no matter what you do, you cannot help them at this point in time.
I absolutely love this game I'm only a little over 20hrs of play time but 9/10 in my book. I do have a few gripes though: in all difficulties the taxes are a little bit too oppressive not overly crazy but to the point where it sucks a bit of the fun out of the game by making you focus in areas you really don't want to. a recommendation I have is make more goods available to fulfill tax requirements it will keep the game feeling smooth. Stone is a massive hurdle to get over for absolutely no reason especially early on in the game. I found myself having to spam sheds/stone cutters until I finally got educated mice for research to build larger storage even still with the medium storage unlocked it clogs my entire system and I have to quit mining until stone cutters can whittle the supply down. Either speed up stone cutter and earth filler buildings or give us another avenue to deal with stone. We also need a way to deal with the massive amount of excess supplies in other areas like being able to export or something. Those aren't game killers but very annoying when you want to focus on other aspects of the game. I know my post sounds like a negative but it's just feedback. I'm in love with this game and can't wait to see where we go next definitely a game I'll be dumping hundreds of hours if not thousands into. Edit: 20hrs later i have found work arounds for all of the issues i mentioned just had to use my brain a little bit which is nice lol so good job devs leaving room for creativity and not completely hand holding.
Worth buying on sale, and sort of worth playing... but after a few hours I'm already getting frustrated by the poor UI and lack of QOL integrations. This is nowhere near as functional or polished as a game like Timberborn is (even back during its earlier Early Release days). I worry this game will never be finished before the studio moves on to something else. So enjoy but buyer beware!
I have 175 hours in this game and can't wait for more content. There is so many city builders out there, but what gives this one a special places in my heart is how it let's you build for both efficiency and beauty, making it incredibly rewarding for creative players. I'm also impressed how all the mechanics seem well thought through, even at this stage. The possibilities for the future of this game seem endless to me and I can't recommend it enough.
This is one of the most addictive city builders I have ever played and one of the most challenging for me. The fact that your doing a lot of vertical building is one of the reasons. Placement is very important. Almost all the land masses are plateaus. Placement of and upgrading of paths and stairs effect how much time it takes your mice to traverse the area as well as their comfort and happiness. You can flatten the land but it is a slow process as you have to mine it to make that happen. Crop growth is effected by the weather and season and you also need to let fields go fallow to keep them healthy. Due to how intricate everything is you really have to go slow at the start. There are only a few buildings that can be moved. Other then that you have to bulldoze and rebuild. I really haven't gotten very far as of yet ( yes I spent way too much time watching the mice at work) I am only on year 2. The first winter is really harsh and when you get through it without losing anyone and without them wanting to hang you, it really feels like an accomplishment. The art style is, to me at least, quite beautiful. The music is solid. But I have to say one of the small things, (and it really doesn't effect actual game play at all) that I really love is that you can zoom in close enough that you can see all your busy little workers going on about their day. Their cute little hats and all. If you are on the fence check out the demo it really is worth checking out.
Great game if you like world building and resource management. Feels a lot like Timberborn, but with a more active gameplay theme. First time playing, I wish there was a tutorial or summary to explain some of the ins and outs of the different gameplay mechanics. Besides that, nothing but positive things to say!
The game is so so so good! if the devs could add a chimney or something to deal with underground smoke that would be amazing!
