Where’s Samantha? That’s exactly what George, an unassuming swatch of fabric is asking. Help George as he searches for his lost love Samantha (wind is a heck of a thing when you’re fabric) overcome puzzles and obstacles in this hand-drawn textile world and unfold George’s whimsically narrated tale.
If you like puzzle platformers, jump into the fabric universe of Where’s Samantha?, a seamingly well-stitched together, engaging yarn with puzzles containing many fun ways to dye.
I confess the title initially caught my eye because it made me think of Olaf looking for Samantha in Frozen 2, even though it was obvious there was no connection from even a cursory glance at the title art and the game’s store page. That said, once I did look into the game, I thought it looked like a cute concept, and even though it’s different from what I usually like to play, I decided to give it a go.
Game Universe
The story starts as an insecure (and paranoid) fabric swatch named George sets out to try to find his missing love, the titular Samantha. Later, as the levels progress, the player also plays as Frank (a character twice as tall as George), clones of George and Frank, and even Samantha herself. Although the initial premise may seem like the standard damsel in distress trope, eventually Samantha takes an active role (and even role reversal by trying to rescue George as he is trying to rescue her). https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2496243977
Gameplay and Mechanics
Much of the gameplay and mechanics is reminiscent of classic 2D platformers like Mario, but that doesn’t mean it’s entirely intuitive. The only tutorial information is provided pictorially using chalkboards within the levels, which is aesthetically adorable but can make interpretation challenging, and unfortunately there’s no list of keys to double-check as a refresher if needed. This sometimes means new mechanics must be figured out by trial and error. I played with mouse and keyboard, although the store page says the game has ‘Partial Controller Support’ (I’m not really sure what that means). https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2496243438 Fortunately the color coding helps with the paucity of explicit explanation. The color of shelves, buttons, socks, and other objects often indicates the color of the character whose weight is needed or can be handled. George (square), Frank (rectangle twice as tall as George), and their clones are red; Samantha (round) is orange. Two characters combine to form a blue character, and three characters combine to form a purple character. The blue character is a little taller than the red character and twice as heavy, while the purple character is of course the heaviest (being three red characters combined). Each of the characters (and their respective clones) also have different abilities that may come in handy during different puzzles. Samantha weighs less than George and Frank and is capable of jumping longer distances or gliding. Frank can double jump. Weight plays a role in many of the puzzles, and sometimes the player will need to combine or split apart the characters to get a character to be a particular weight (or to not be a particular weight) to solve them. Some puzzles will need two or even three characters to solve, while in others the player will need to move each character through the same puzzle in succession. There is no life limit, so players can respawn an unlimited number of times. Most respawning takes place at checkpoints, and most of the checkpoints are thoughtfully and generously placed, but there are still a few spots that can be very tricky in terms of timing and respawning placement. As the levels progress, new challenges are added (e.g., bubbles that cause the characters to split apart if they are combined, lasers, spinning blades). Unfortunately, I also ran into a couple of bugs and poorly designed puzzles that resulted in me having to restart levels. This doesn’t happen frequently, but it happened enough times that it is worth mentioning. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2496244352
Art Style and Graphics
The art style and graphics are an area where the game really shines. The textures on the different fabrics, objects, and surfaces seem tangible, showing an incredible level of detail considering being hand drawn. The puzzles cleverly use everyday objects (e.g., socks, screws, pencils, bottle caps, buttons) scaled in a way that makes sense for characters that are fabric swatches.
Sound and Music
The story segments in between levels are voiced by a British narrator à la Shining Time Station and Thomas & Friends. The majority of sound effects dovetail perfectly with the action and scene, although there are a couple that are perplexing. For example, why does an eerie Halloween-esque sound effect play when close to a yarn ball? The background music blends in for the most part, but makes sense with the current tone of the story when noticed. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2496244700
Achievements and Extras
Where’s Samantha? has no achievements, trading cards, or extras. Although the store description mentions collectibles, I think it may just be referring to the story segments that play between levels if all of the letters have been collected. However, I haven’t actually tested if the story segment doesn’t play if 100% of the letters aren’t collected; I’m basing this interpretation off of the following text from the store description, “while also collecting letters that will reveal more of the story as you progress”.
Verdict
At $12.99 at the time of review, if you like puzzle platformers, Where’s Samantha? has a cute art style and fun puzzles that make it well worth buying at full price. However, if puzzle platformers aren’t your jam, this game probably isn’t going to change your mind.
Visit SaveOrQuit.com for detailed game reviews, posted daily!
Set in a colorful kid-friendly fantasy world, where you play as a piece of fabric in search of your lost loved one. The game progresses with a fantastic narration from a talented British voice actor, which gave the game a wonderful poetic flavor. The game starts with a well-scripted story narration and upon every successful level completion, you get the narration for the next chapter of the book. Plot: Once upon a time there were two love birds, George and Samantha, two pieces of small swatches of fabric. Deeply in love, nothing could keep them apart. Until . . . one day a mysterious strong gust of wind took Samantha away. George rushed to save his beloved but failed. Now George must race against time and odds to save his soul mate against all odds. In search of Samantha, George finds himself in a strange new realm full of complex puzzles and structures, but nothing can stop George until he reaches his beloved. Gameplay: a kid-friendly puzzle platformer that is enjoyable and engaging enough for all ages. As I started the game I was greeted with a welcoming minimalistic UI and a fantastic storybook with narrations. The game progresses through levels and the completion of each level unlocks further into this storyline. And I must stay the scripting for this storyline and narration is very well done; as each narrative starts playing, it recounts what I just witnessed in the previous level and hints at what I might expect from the next one without spoiling anything. This worked wonders for my 9-year-old cousin who shared a playthrough with me; he understood every possible function and puzzle that he might encounter. The game features a simple yet effective set of controls that play out flawlessly without causing any difficulty for a younger audience. Basic WASD for movement and space for jumping. But where the game really shines is with its weight balancing system puzzles, where you have to balance your weight with color coordination. Each color represents a weight class. By pressing Alt-left the main character turns into two similar clones, which can be used to unlock and activate different types of locks and puzzles. Right after that, the weight balancing comes into play. You get to consume colored fabric that help you gain more weight to unlock color-coded locks, gates, and switches. You can also shade these weights by creating clones that can help unlock and activate puzzles, gates, etc. The game’s world is full of puzzles and challenges created with household items like fabric, combs, brushes, buttons, socks, etc. This gives a game an added sense of immersion with the storyline. And I must say the flow of puzzle complexity is just right it's fun, enjoyable, and easy to get used to. The first set of puzzles were a no-brainer, and as the game progressed the complexity increased at a stable consumable rate. World design: An amazing-looking fantasy world, made out of common household items that fit perfectly with the game and its story. Music and sound effects: This is the only area of the game that I didn’t enjoy. The background music didn’t play out well with the game, in my opinion. And neither did most of the sound effects; these could have been better. Positives: + Touching storyline + Fantastic Narration + Fantastic world design + Family friendly + Smart, not-too-difficult set of puzzles and challenges + World consisted of common household items that fit perfectly with the game Negatives: - Background music and sound effects could have been better A touching story about George and Samantha, two swatches of fabric who are deeply in love but separated by mysterious circumstances. Now George must venture out in a quest to rescue his beloved. 8/10 Key provided by the developer/publisher for review purposes. Any opinions expressed are entirely my own! Where's Samantha is a story-driven ,Wool-derful puzzle platformer. From the moment I first laid eyes on this game, immediately fell in love with those wool-derful stitches and wool world. There are 45 levels bursting with mind blowing puzzles. There are 3 different characters and their clones, each with different skills, you have to use their skills and weight to solve all those unique puzzles. The puzzle starts getting hard after level 30.My characters have died 441 times total, but dont worry, those check points are really thoughtful. My gameplay video incase you get stuck.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIKqxwtevZo
A visually nice game with a little bit anticlimactic ending. I even sqeezed in both heroes there, but still got the same one. Puzzles are mostly easy with some medium ones, same for platforming. Narration is very good. Relaxing beautiful game.
Cool puzzle game, kids will love it. Bright environment, fun to play. I will recommend this game
Saw that this was narrated by the same guy that was Mattis on Ronja, the Robber's Daughter and decided to take a chance. +cut scenes which unfold the story/mystery of where Samantha went were well told and funny and worth the price of the game alone +controls were intuitive -sometimes the hints for the mechanics of the puzzles are easy to miss +puzzles were progressively more challenging but not impossible +you can resize the screen while playing making this a good game to play while multi-tasking
Textiles and fabrics have an interesting way of weaving themselves into our video games. Titles like Kirby’s Epic Yarn, Unravel, Woven, and of course the half-dozen Sackboy adventures on various PlayStation systems all prove that there is an undeniable charm in playing video games rooted in the arts and crafts culture, and Where’s Samantha? is no different. This 2D side-scrolling platform/puzzler is not only a joy to play; you’ll continually find yourself getting lost in the intricate details and thoughtful use of sewing and crafting to construct these magnificent levels. At the heart of this magical adventure we have a storybook love story actually being read to us from a storybook. After the narrator finishes you turn the page to open an exciting and creative world of fun and danger created mostly from real world items. The backdrop is burlap with swatches of other fabrics to blend in and create the actual levels. You have flowers created from string stems and button blooms. Combs are expertly placed to offer a spiky death if you fail to slip under or used to construct deadly fan blades. Wool socks shoot streams of steamy air into the world that can hurt or help you depending on the situation, and pushpins serve as levers to control machinery. Where’s Samantha? is a fantastic platformer loaded with charm and oozing with style. While lacking the challenge more seasoned gamers are looking for, anyone with a soul will still have a magical time exploring this world and helping George to reunite with Sam. This is definitely one of my favorite indie titles of 2021 and a great fit for anyone looking for some wholesome family fun.
Is Samantha worth finding? Or was it really the friends we made along the way? (It wasn't.)
Full review: https://www.keengamer.com/articles/reviews/pc-reviews/wheres-samantha-review-finding-something-to-cherish/ Where's Samantha? may whet the appetite of hardcore platformer fanatics with its lovely aesthetic and intriguing manner of puzzle-solving. Though what it gains in intrigue, it loses in untapped potential. Best served as passable entertainment for a pleasant day of gaming, it doesn't quite hit the highs it wishes to through its star cameo and distinct visual style. In-between the extremes of either objective direction, it maintains a feeling of pleasant monotony—never moving, never ending. + Endearing story, outside of occasionally pointless self-mockery + Excellent use of color via gameplay + Wonderful aesthetic choice and design - Eventually tedious sameness to stages - Where's the soundtrack? - Ending is anticlimactic
Incredibly simple, yet pleasing game. The mechanics are awesome -- something that I look for in any decent platformer. The characters are cool, and though they are so simple pieces of cloth, you do get attached to them. The story is very interesting, and is enhanced by the voice actor. Great game. Definitely recommend!
This is a really unique and fun puzzle platformer. You can tell that a lot of care went into each level. A great job by Respect Studios.
