About

When Stars Collide is a science-fantasy adventure romance story.
In the game, the player joins the crew of The Ophelia, a deep space exploration vessel as they uncover a trove of technology from a nearly forgotten species. Unaware that, among the items they unearth is an inhabited stasis pod, the crew recovers the found items but inadvertently awakens the occupant of the pod in the process.
Upon awakening, Wil Nymera, a young interstellar wanderer, discovers they've been asleep for nearly 500 years. With nowhere else to go, Wil temporarily joins the crew after revealing they are Veleian, an ancient species known for their telepathy, advanced technology, and tendency to either guide younger races toward betterment - or else obliterate them.
As Wil attempts to settle in and restart their life after a 500 year nap they did not intend to take, the crew of The Ophelia find themselves caught in a struggle between ancient powers and newer factions eager to get their hands on Veleia's tech and a centuries old secret buried in the depths of Wil's mind.

I played this game while it was being released on Itch.io and have played every route during each update, please note the playtime as recorded on Steam isn't an accurate representation. I feel like I need to say that I normally really truly am not much of a Sci-fi or space shenanigans type of reader, and yet despite that I was completely won over by this game and it is hands down one of my favorite VNs. As someone who likes to run every LIs route as a new MC I absolutely love and value the time and effort put into making the MC customizable. Hairstyle options, a skin tone slider, choose your pronouns and body type etc. For a game that has CGs it's an amazing amount of variability for the MC customization. Normally in these games there's at least one character that I'm a little 'eh' on, even with Steamberry's past games ( I'm just too big of a cry baby for Magnus' route replays ) but not this time. I cannot for the life of me rank these characters in any consistent order of preference, I love them all, and as per usual reluctantly also fell for a few side characters as well. Including one that's only on screen for a grand total of maybe 5 minutes. MC strikes a balance between getting to be a Badass and also being fairly grounded and realistic, I think, despite the setting and background for the character. You also get the opportunity to be pretty sassy if you wish to & the core story arc was something I found deeply relatable. This one is going on the to be re-played infinitely list, for sure. Highly recommended!

Highly recommend this wonderful sci-fi romance VN with a delightfully opinionated MC - you can pick their name, appearance, and pronouns, but as with another Steamberry title, Gilded Shadows, many parts of their past and personality are set, which gives depth and resonance to the way they play off the LIs. IMO the game is a little slow to start (my first playthrough I was a little impatient, but it's necessary grounding; give it time to set up the world and the cast for you), but once it gets going, you're really off to the races for a delightful time with a wonderful set of characters! Originally played during the episodic releases on itch.io, so my actual playtime is unknown but definitely waaaay more than Steam acknowledges (I'm at 32/45 achieves, which gives a more complete picture of how much of the game I've seen). I adored the time I spent with When Stars Collide. Esh's games are always a treat, and because of the way this one was written (a great deal of what's going on outside of The Ophelia is the same in every route, although the romance and the way the MC and their LI interact with the problems they're facing changes substantially), you learn a little more about the world in each route. It's absolute catnip for lore-hounds, and one of the best parts about being along for the original episodic release schedule was coming up with theories and then finding out whether or not they were correct (or close). The flowchart and the affinity tracker make it easy to see where you're headed on each route, which I also really appreciated. There's even a system to keep your saves for each LI organized! This is a game that very clearly WANTS you to have a good time and richly succeeds in delivering that. Personal fave was Kav; I've already played through his route in full twice and in parts dozens of times to really appreciate it properly and shall certainly be doing so again. <3
This game is FREE? And amazing?! I cannot recommend this game enough. The story is so lore packed as well as written incredibly. The romance moments are so perfectly placed/balanced. All the love interests are adorable, so much so that I had to complete every route... besides some of the bad endings. My only complaints being: -The art style isn't my favorite, but obviously art is subjective. -I know I mentioned the lore being incredibly vast, and it is, however it can be A LOT to digest sometimes. Regardless, if you love a good ol' visual novel, check this one out!
Met Erik, 10/10
Full disclosure: I have played this game in its entirety already on itch.io and am playing again here to support the dev. If you're looking for hours of an amazing story with a great plot and sweet (and a little spicy) romance, this game is for you! The MC's personality is amazing, 100/10. The love interests are all phenomenal, though of course I lean most toward the banter-y/gremlin-y ones, personally. And when there is banter, it's so fun and makes me laugh every time! This is a great kind of story for the booktok girlies and romantasy enjoyers (I mean... okay it's a sci-fi but still). It's immersive, has great world-building, and you can really tell the love and care that the dev put into the story. It's semi-linear most of the way through the game, but even then there's so much replayability because every LI has different responses and scenes at certain points, so of course while the overall plot is the same, there's still more than enough variation to make it enjoyable to go through again and again. Not to mention the bonus scenes you can unlock! Chef's kiss! Amazing! Sometimes I open up the game just to replay the bonus scenes because I love them so much! That being said... if you're looking for explicit gameplay because this was marked as an "adult only" game, I'm sorry to say you're going to be disappointed. If you're just here for sexy-times and nudity, this ain't the game for you. This is truly a novel experience (pun fully intended); you've gotta read to get to the spice!
Was suggested during the 'embrace the unknown' initiative and man was I not disappointed! Gives me similar vibes to Andromeda Six (one of my FAV story/choices/romance game). The fact that this game is free on Stream is criminal, I would gladly pay $$ for this passion work. 7hrs in and only achieved two endings for one character.. so much content and story to consume!
after Changeling and Gilded Shadows, i've had this on my wishlist as a must play, and so far it doesn't disappoint! edit to add: just play it already :)
This a gem. Best main character building as usual. As usual brilliant plot development. I would get hooked even if everything was drawn as stickmen, but it get a beautiful art, too. Grab it while you can
I have so many hours into this on Itch.io. I have never seen a Steamberry Studio game I didn't love, and this is no exception. The intertwined routes is different from the usual format, but it makes a compelling narrative. The characters are all very well developed, the setting is beautiful, and the choices all matter. I love having the affinity meter to help guide me when I haven't developed a feel for who the character is and what they'd like, yet. This is beautifully done from beginning to end, including some hilarious family moments in some of the routes. Every Steamberry Studio game is better than the one before, which I never think is possible. Absolutely fabulous. Highly recommended.
