A review from the perspective of an old 2014 Warface player looking for nostalgia.
Before anything else: This review comes from someone who specifically went into this game looking for nostalgia. I first started playing Warface back in 2014 and played it on and off until around 2018. I recently fell down a little nostalgia rabbit hole after finding out that Warface: Clutch had shut down, and eventually came across this new version of Warface. I decided to give it a try without expecting too much, mainly because I wanted to see how much of the Warface I remembered was still there. And there actually is quite a bit of it. Both PvE and PvP still contribute towards your overall rank progression, and they kept the old Warface rank icons and names. Seeing those again after all these years is a genuinely nice nostalgic touch. The voice acting is also surprisingly close to how I remember it. I would not be surprised if they reused some of the original voice assets, although I have also heard people claim that AI was used to replicate some of the voices. Whatever the case may be, a lot of it sounds familiar enough that it immediately brought back memories of the old game. Naturally, this being a modern free-to-play game, it also comes with a battle pass and a massive amount of microtransactions, including plenty that feel very pay-to-win. I can't really give them too much blame for monetising a free-to-play game, and Warface certainly isn't new to this kind of monetisation, but I personally don't think the current game is worth investing significant amounts of real money into.
PvE
PvE currently consists of the regular missions recommended for a party as well as many of the old Raids/Special Operations. For example, Tower Raid is still here, although it is now called HQ. For someone coming back specifically for nostalgia, this is probably the strongest part of the game. The missions themselves are still extremely close to how they were back then. The layouts are basically identical copies of the old missions, although some parts have been shortened, presumably to save time. Tower Raid/HQ, for example, skips some of the floors that you originally had to fight through. Still, stepping out of that helicopter again and immediately recognising the environment after more than a decade is a great feeling. Unfortunately, the actual gameplay of these missions is nowhere near as good as I remember it being. The old Special Operations can now be played either with a party or completely solo. In theory, that's a nice option. In practice, hardly anyone seems to be playing these missions at the moment, which means that you will very often end up playing them alone whether you wanted to or not. And solo, they're honestly pretty boring. You barely take any damage, there seems to be little to no meaningful punishment for failing objectives, the enemy AI is braindead and there is practically no real way to fail the mission. You are also locked into the Rifleman role, which I assume is primarily there so that you can continuously provide yourself with ammunition when playing alone. The AI in general feels like a massive downgrade from old Warface, both in terms of intelligence and animations. Enemies just don't feel particularly threatening or convincing. Their reactions and movement feel worse than what I remember from the original game, which is strange considering how old the game I'm comparing it to actually is. Some of the visual identity has thankfully survived. The enemies are still immediately recognisable as Blackwood soldiers, and some of their overall designs have been preserved. But nothing beats the old textures and designs in my opinion. The really old versions of enemies such as the Assault and CQB units, for instance, are gone. I still much prefer how those soldiers looked in the older versions of Warface. Because of how easy everything has become, these old Special Operations now feel less like actual cooperative missions and more like walking through a Warface museum where the exhibits occasionally shoot back at you. Back then, these missions felt like something you actually needed a team for. There was tension because your team could genuinely screw up and fail. Classes mattered. Cooperation mattered. Here, you're mostly just walking through the same locations while killing enemies that barely pose a threat. That being said, this is also the part of the game I can most easily recommend. If you're someone like me who played Warface around 2014 and just wants that nostalgia feeling to hit for a couple of hours, play the PvE missions. Walk through those environments you haven't seen in ten years and suddenly realise that you still remember where everything is. It's not particularly challenging and can honestly get quite boring, but that nostalgia hit is definitely there.
PvP
PvP has a completely different set of problems. The matchmaking basically doesn't seem to exist. High-ranking and presumably experienced players are regularly placed in the same games as completely new or very low-level players. You'll see people with very high ranks playing both with and against people who have only just started. As you would expect, this frequently results in extremely unbalanced rounds. For a new player trying to learn the game, I imagine this is incredibly frustrating. There doesn't seem to be much of an attempt to create teams based on experience or skill, so sometimes one side simply gets completely destroyed. It makes PvP very beginner-unfriendly. There also appears to be a pretty serious cheating problem. I've already encountered players who very strongly appeared to be using ESP/wallhacks or aimbots. When you combine that with matchmaking that already produces wildly unbalanced teams, PvP can become frustrating very quickly.
Community and playerbase
The community situation doesn't really help either. When I checked SteamDB, the game peaked at roughly 400 Steam players today, with an all-time peak of only around 650 players at the end of February 2026. I'm fairly certain those numbers only represent people playing through Steam and that other launchers/platforms contribute additional players, so I would not claim that 400 people represent the game's entire population. Still, the game definitely feels small. This becomes particularly noticeable when trying to find people for PvE. Many of the old Special Operations seem practically deserted, which is why you're so often stuck playing them solo in the first place. Communication can also be difficult. A large part of the current community seems to come from the Russian-speaking playerbase, with many of the servers and players centred around that region. Even when I do find other people, many don't speak English, which makes finding players to communicate with and form proper PvE groups with rather difficult. That lack of an active English-speaking community is especially noticeable when you're coming from old Warface and remember these missions as cooperative experiences.
Conclusion
There are parts of this game that genuinely made me smile. Seeing the old rank icons again, hearing familiar voice lines, recognising Blackwood soldiers and stepping out of that helicopter into a mission I hadn't played in more than ten years absolutely triggered the nostalgia I was looking for. I'll probably come back again and finish the remaining PvE missions purely because I want to experience that feeling a few more times, but I can't see this game as something serious to invest a lot of time or money into as of right now.
All progress got wiped, thats already pretty bad, when you had good stuff like me, but than also they removed stuff like SED weapons, so the already kinda bad and dead class now cant even get its ONLY secondary or other primary, and also armor, but you can only get armor via event shop, that is not bad on its own, but the fact that stuff like blackwood armor (if you owned it) is just gone, plus weapons, levels etc is kinda frustrating, i will change my reviw if they manag to turn the game around and/or compensate old players, but the game was already dead long ago (excluding russians cose they are very activ) But maybe this time we will get SED and good content, right?
