Pros: - took me 5 minutes to learn - I paid 1.50£ to make my VN in 7 hours for an external game jam and this let me avoid programming in its entirely. I couldn't have made a better purchase. Cons: - has some bugs (text looping twice first time when you enter a new script for example) - is very rigid. No programming means that you won't just modify the thing to get you the functions that you want. There is no full screen currently and I couldn't find a way to make a functioning exit button, so the "X" at the top of the screen had to do. - no data encryption on the export, so everyone will be able to see every asset that you added to the project when you export the project as a standalone. That being said every job has its tool. If you need a headache free way to throw a visual novel together without any coding experience, this is the simplest and cheapest visual novel maker out there.

The user interface is simple and easy to use. I'd been looking for something that required the least coding experience as possible to work on a six month visual novel project. It has everything you need on the main screen: text, image, music, wait-time, choice division (can do the different scripts for player options this way), character, voice + sound fx, and other buttons (called "tags"). The dev really fleshed out what comes to mind when you think of a visual novel and made sure to make the process easier for users. You can also customize the text box in a minimal way through text color, size, box shape + color, opacity, and corner details. You can look through your different scripts by clicking the text label StartUp Script under Statistics (keeping in mind that every player choice can lead to a new script!). Other than the create option, the engine also runs a play feature where users can play other published visual novels-- you can sort by latest, most downloaded, and liked. You can create your visual novel scenes with the display open & add or delete tags before and after each other without any problems. It can sometimes run slow and crash now and then. I had some problems exporting after purchasing the DLC, but got through to the game dev and had a great experience despite the tight deadline. Great community. I actually won the first place scholarship for the program I made my visual novel demo for, and I really owe it to this engine for being so accessible. The fact that it's a code-free experience at NO COST puts it up there for people starting out in VN creation without any experience. Disregarding the slightly outdated Steam page, the actual engine is fairly intuitive. I look forward to keep using this product and see it grow. It has a lot of potential. Some suggestions: - A revised timeline feature for the Scripts - Search bars for the Play feature and Tags - Option for an automatic Tag scroller in Create feat. - Slight adjustment to Tag Creation (ex. clicking the Tags once then dropping one down instead of holding the click, or an add feature (like a plus button per every tag feature). - A way to see the choices a player has made up to the present alongside the Save/Load feature. - Edit feature in VN Creation for Tags and Scripts.
Great visual novel engine - easy to use and functional. Other much more expensive VN makers have all the bells and whistles, but a lot of that I usually find to be surplus to requirements anyway... If you are looking for a program to write a VN, I recommend just installing this so you can crack on with your best seller, quick picture book for the kids or anything in between.

I had tried to click every button, but nothing I can do with it. Nothing happened. In other words, this software cannot be used.
"Visual Novel Engine" is a garbage ripoff of Ren'Py, worse in every respect, but where Ren'Py is at least FOSS, this isn't, the developer wants to scam gamers TEN BUCKS so they can export their horrible cringey high school fanfictions in a format they can then dump on Steam for $100 through Steam Direct as if their construction kit fanfiction was a game, instead of a cringey fanfiction. Ugh. Just use Ren'Py... or better yet, don't. Steam is for games, not badly written fanfiction e-books. It's not even a complete software package. The developers abandoned this 2 years and 4 months ago. It will never be completed. This unfinished, misleadingly priced construction kit is just polluting Steam, and enabling people who should never make games or e-books to dump their trash on Steam, making gaming worse for everyone.
