The Origin of the Bishojo Game Genre

Seems like a pretty good release. It's basically just a launcher (made in Unity) that launches the games in Mednafen. Although it's not as user-friendly as the Switch release, I have to give the developers credit for their strict adherence to the GPL, going as far as providing the source for both Mednafen AND their Unity launcher! The side content (like manual scans/translations) are high quality. There's also English-subbed versions of the cutscenes included, though the Switch release handles this part better. The soundtrack DLC includes both lossy and lossless versions of the listed tracks. Also the collection seems to launch under Proton just fine, though some functions of the launcher don't work as expected. You also need to play around with Steam Input to get controller input working properly. Overall, I recommend this release, but I do suggest looking into the Switch release first if that's an option for you.
Since I play my Steam Deck and PC more these days than my Switch, I was hoping these collections would eventually make their way to PC. However, I am left somewhat disappointed. This port (which it isn’t really), feels more like an after-thought. On PC the launcher does not hide the fact it's just an emulator. The games are launched in small windows, and Story Viewer launches VLC player. Steam Deck does not have this problem, which would have been my preferred way to play, if it wasn't for the bad controller input, in-game Gamepad, and any other controller does not work without user created controls. There are things missing that would make the game more enjoyable and add things make make it stand out from the Switch version: - English Subtitles during cut-scenes / game-play. - Save State. - Badge / Card collection for Steam profile. - Point Shop items. - Achievements. Things need addressing: - Improved Steam Deck compatibility. - This mostly relates to the controller input. - If collection two and three are coming update this launcher, so everything is under one roof.
The games don't function. Once you select what to play the it doesn't read any inputs. Needs to be fixed asap.
It's frankly ridiculous that this only includes the first three games' PC Engine versions, despite this coming out a year after all three Nintendo Switch compilations that include everything. No Valis IV, no option to switch between versions of the games, and 6 dollars for ROMs? I don't get it.
Absolutely not. This is one of the laziest ports I've ever seen. The games aren't that great to begin with, although I had some nostalgia for Valis 2. But at like $30 for this it's absolutely not worth it. These are old 90s games. You get whole collections of dozens of these games these days for like $15. On top of that, the emulation is not good. You can't really alt-tab out of a game, and when you come back, sometimes they're running at permanently 10x speed, rendering them unplayable. The controls are terrible. I guess in Valis 3 they mapped functionality to Run on the PCE? That's crazy, but the geniuses at Edia just faithfully reproduced that so you'll need to use menu? to do a slide? WT actual F?
