Warning: In-Game Cash Shop This game is infested with a toxic mobile app style cash shop. You will be prompted to and expected to give money/credit card details to the developers through this cash shop to buy in-game goods so you can play the game.
"Vacuum Pilot" is an extremely poorly made "speedrun" themed action arcade "racer" with phoned in graphics and some seriously disgusting monetisation. What do you do in the game? Race through badly rendered, incredibly lazy 2D minimalist retro levels using spaceship mechanics ripped off from far better games like 1962's "SpaceWar!" vector games and 1980's Asteroids! from Atari. The graphics here are particularly awful, so bad that it actually stands out as one of the worst looking games on Steam. Quite an accomplishment. It's a big contributor to the failure of the game to attract gamers despite having no up-front cost. Gaming is a primarily visual medium, and if developers want to succeed, they must understand that it's not an area for compromise. This was made with the godawful "GameMaker Studio" construction kit/toolset, which is popular amongst amateur developers because it handholds you through making really crap 2D games that you can publish for $100 on Steam Direct. This lets you pat yourself on the back for pretending to be a real game developer, which explains why GameMaker Studio is responsible for so much ignored garbage on Steam. GameMaker Studio has never really been used to make a truly successful game, but that doesn't stop people from trying and failing. It's a particularly bad game engine that can only be used for making low quality 2D products. Like this. You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, as the old saying goes. Another reason this particular game wasn't successful. On the important matter of pricing and value for gamers, there's a lot going on here with monetisation, so this really shouldn't be considered a truly free product because of that. There's no initial download price, but the developer was charging $5 USD for this. Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It seems like a nice gesture for the game to have no up-front cost anymore, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. This is also a bit of a slap in the face to anyone who showed enough questionable judgement to pay money for this... nobody got refunded. It doesn't stop there, this game is also infested with mobile app store like microtransactions. This is a consumer hostile model that we don't need to see on PC. It's deceptively priced to gouge gamers, and that's a reason in itself to avoid this. The grift and cash grabbing keeps getting worse... this product is hooked into Steams "Totally not NFTs" Community Marketplace/Inventory, which means you can buy and sell and trade "tokens" (fungible ones in this case) for real world money, and you can "earn" these tokens by playing the game. This is never done with the interests of gamers in mind, the "developer" behind this gets paid for every trade, and has presumbly also farmed up a bunch of the items to sell on the market, too. This kind of Steam abuse, combined with a minimum-viable-product non-game, does no service to gamers whatsoever. In terms of public reception, this failed to appeal to the 130 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at just a dozen or so concurrent players, and now there's basically nobody playing it. Even though it's free. This is a dismal public reception, but it's easy to see why gamers rejected it. Since free games don't contribute to your game collector badge and other profile stuff, is this a worthwhile addition to your Steam library? Nope. This isn't worth downloading. I didn't pay money, but I still feel ripped off.
Developer Response!
The developer has weighed in to inform everyone they didn't read the Developer Usage Rules for Steam "partners", or they deliberately ignored the part where Valve says:
Though it may be tempting, not every review needs to be responded to. A developer response will frequently draw more attention than the original statement, potentially turning a small issue into a much larger community discussion. It's also not a good idea to use this feature to refute customer opinions. Your direct attention can be seen as validation or a defensive attempt to silence your customers.
The developer breaches Valve guidelines to tell outright lies and to attack this reviewer with the libelous and utterly untrue accusation that this review is a "troll". Why the lies and attacks? Because the truth threatens the developers scam behaviour here... whenever scammers get confronted with the truth, they squeal. This review is not a troll, it's deadly serious. The developer tells two other lies. They claim there's no in-game cash shop. The Steam store page clearly carries the warning about this, as is required by the Steam T&Cs. The developer lied. Go look at the store page side bar. See where it says "In-App Purchases"? The developer is utterly full of crap when they lie about this. The next lie, that there's no Steam Marketplace scam attached to this nasty cash grab. Here's the link to the store items that the developer claims doesn't exist: https://store.steampowered.com/itemstore/1677570/browse/?filter=all See for yourself. See how the developer lied. The developer chosing to lie about something that's immediately provable with evidence right in front of everyone's eyes is bizarre, but there it is for all to see. You can see why the developer chose this toxic dishonesty; they want all the money they can scam out of you, and they're willing to lie in front of everyone and breach Valve guidelines to do so. It's disgusting, isn't it? Nothing in the developers pointless breach of Valve guidelines changes any of the objective facts of my review. My review stands unaltered. I cannot recommend this game to anyone. Edit: The developer doubles down on his lying, but then slips up and admits there is a cash shop, just like mobile apps have.
Our in-game shop
Proof, a confession. This garbage has a toxic cash shop, just like mobile apps do. Why the developer continues to try to lie about this is unclear but he just admitted it. This is toxic mobile app tier scamware with a cash shop just like mobile apps have, and the developer both admits it, and shizophrenically tries to hide the fact it's there and lies about it's presence. The developer both admitting and denying the presence of a cash shop comes across as some kind of derangement, but the facts are there, and the developer now got caught admitting this has a toxic cash shop in it.
Nadal się uczę, ale kurczę, to jest fajne. I trudne. I fajne. I wymagające. I fajne. I, mój Boże, jestem w tym beznadziejna, ale jak dotąd naprawdę mi się podoba.
I hate this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game but I'm sure you can get very skilled with it and have fun. beat it very fast also. NOTHING compares to Nothing tho.
nice game
It is challenging, yet fun and addicting. Reminds me of some flash game too, so it’s nostalgic.
