This game is beyond addicting, probably the best you can get as a chess enjoyer. While this roguelike deckbuilder version of chess seems to play very similarly to chess, you will find out that it is much more complex than what meets the eye, and requires a whole new level of strategy. The balancing isn't quite the best, however, it is still in its early phase, and likely to be improved through later updates.
The chess engine behind Usurper is a beast!! Tons of challenge, variety, and depth here. 10/10
As a casual chess player, this game almost feels tailor-made for me. Keeps the original competitive feel of the board game even with the roguelike mechanical changes. One of the most relaxing roguelikes I've ever played too. The opponent AI for the campaign seems to make significantly more blunders than the average chess AI, so professional chess players may not find the game particularly challenging, but I felt the difficulty level was perfect considering the increased complexity compared to the board game.
4/10 - game speed is slooooow even at the max you can speed it up with the game to 4 used 3rd party program to play even faster and make it bearable
The bgm is boring and the AI is stupid Even though it could have been easily avoided, the AI chose death.
If you are a fan of chess, this is a must play!
This game is a typical deck builder slash roguelike. The deck builder is selecting cards that represent chess pieces to place and roguelike to unlock new pieces with untypical chess moves. You can only place pieces next to your king, which forces you to move your king often to get new pieces close to the enemy king. I think this concept sounds cool on paper. Unfortunately, this game has a 4x animation speed ... it needs like a 16x. Soooo slow ... and the music is atrocious. The game seems to be locked to fullscreen at 60 fps. I really want to play games like this in windowed mode at a lower resolution. It needs more TLC on the UX. I feel like this sort of lazy/generic presentation of the game could really benefit from better visuals to draw more interest. But I feel really annoyed that I have to stare at a nearly completely static screen with the music muted. I got it in a bundle, but I don't know if it has legs for me. I really wish steam had a meh button, but I think there is enough to dislike here to give it a no.
Chess time-killer with good progression (for the first 8 levels) and its definitely more "chess-like" than Shotgun King (which is good game still) Gameplay loop is fun, upgrades and gambits bring variety, and factions are distinct and cool: - chess faction is mobile and nimble - shogi faction is defensive and slowly crawling towards center - tsar faction is all about area denial - and then there are egyptians, who are just confusing to play as and against (I feel like button to highlight attacked/defended squares would be cool) But at some point game started to feel grindy, so I think, I`ll move on for now. Also some boss fights are so BS, like one king can solo checkmate you if you are not ready.
