If you played Oids (1987) on the Atari ST, you have a good idea what UfoPilot: The Phadt Menace is. It's a 2D thrust based shooting game like Asteroids, but on planetary surfaces and on a Choplifter-like rescue mission. Planetary surfaces? Then you might be wondering if it's not more like Gravitar. Not really, because The Phadt Menace lacks Gravitar's eponymous feature: the gravity. Just like Oids. There is a lot to like here, from the Star Wars spoof (it's not just the game's title) to the beautiful 16-bit style visuals. I love the sound effects and the hilarious voice samples that give the game an early 90's arcade vibe. Overall, the game likes to make fun of itself and instantly creates a good mood. The gameplay is basically pretty good, too, but I think that several design choices were made, which left the game wihout providing a real challenge for the player. There is also no scoring system to motivate you to do better. I went into detail about this here.
Fun shooter that can get repetitive after the first planet. The game's objective is straightforward. While eliminating defenses and navigating the stage, you must rescue all prisoners. Although stages are rarely easy and involve numerous caves and walls, colliding with them isn't particularly harmful. The majority of the danger comes from hostile turrets. They're mostly harmless if they're out in the open and you have a clear shot from a distance. But it's an entirely another story in confined spaces. They can kill you quickly, particularly rocket turrets that shoot homing missiles at you. Besides basic enemies, you also have to watch out for mines and bobby traps. Rescuing prisoners is easy. You first blow up the prison, then land and let the prisoners to board the ship, and lastly fly back to the mothership. You must be cautious with the guns since you can kill prisoners very easily. Fortunately, you only need to save 75% to complete the task. Gold coins are used to customize ships. You start with six, but you can earn more by completing all objectives within a mission. Each mission has four goals: destroy everything, free all prisoners, and locate two basic coins. Gold coins can then be invested on one of six different stats, such as weapons or engines. Each stat can only be upgraded four times, but you can place coins anywhere you want for each mission. The game reveals everything it has to offer in the first planet. Other planets change the scenery, but you’ll still be shooting the same enemies. Stages are also bigger, which means it can get repetitive when you need to make several trips to the mothership and back.
If you are an old Oids fan this seems to be as close as your are gonna get to the old game.. it does have upgrades which is nice.. but cant redo controls. wish I could redo controls... please let me set my own key for controls..
