It's clear that it's trying to be a SUPERHOT parody, but this just ain't it. The developer was like "nah, we don't shoot guns, we throw them". The hits not registering at times was kinda annoying and the "boomerang" style gun was glitchy. The animations were clunky and underdeveloped. Try again.
small but good game
Overview:
'UBERCOLD' is an extremely short first person shooter parodying the popular game 'SUPERHOT', a game where you manipulate slow motion to your advantage to complete levels. 'UBERCOLD' attempts to adopt many features that 'SUPERHOT' has but definitely falls flat. That being said though, the game actually isn't terrible despite it not being as good as the game it's inspired by. The developers state that the game is a parody so going into this I didn't expect there to be much and low and behold, that's exactly what I got. Unlike 'SUPERHOT', 'UBERCOLD' doesn't have a story or plot following the gameplay so there's nothing going for the game besides how it plays. The flashy texts that the game replicates from 'SUPERHOT' just says nonsense with no relevance between each level whatsoever. So if the game primarily relies on gameplay, how is it?
Gameplay:
As said, 'UBERCOLD' plays similarly to 'SUPERHOT' but is far simpler and easier to play. The only difference is that unlike 'SUPERHOT' where the game enters slow motion when you stop moving, 'UBERCOLD' enters it when an enemy dies and only briefly. The bullets that you're meant to dodge are in slow motion indefinitely while you move in real time making the game super easy. Even on hard mode the game is still relatively easy because of how the mechanics work. To start off, you're given only one weapon: an insanely lethal pistol that you essentially use like a boomerang throwing it at enemies, killing them in one hit. You don't shoot anything in the game, just throw which is an interesting concept and because the game is so short, I didn't find a reason for it to really have any other means of attacking. You can either kill enemies by throwing the pistol or by retrieving it. It isn't terrible to be honest and I completed both regular mode and hard mode in about 20 minutes, spending roughly 10 minutes in each of them. Although they are different, the gameplay is essentially the same. The only difference is that the maps are slightly larger and there are more enemies in hard mode. It sounds hard on the surface but the way the game was programmed makes hard mode just a longer easy mode. The only noticeable difference in gameplay I noticed was that enemies will sometimes dodge (emphasis on "sometimes"). If you're a good distance away from them, they'll take zero notice of your existence making them sitting ducks and there were plenty of times where I found super easy kills simply because the enemies weren't actively hunting me as they would be like in 'SUPERHOT'. I don't believe the overall game is as awful as some people have said considering it's a parody but it's definitely a poor man's version of 'SUPERHOT'. And if you wanted to play that game but settled for this cause you can't fork over the cash, then it'd just make you want to play the original even more.
Controls:
Not very intuitive but definitely unique. Aside from moving and throwing the pistol, you also retrieve the said pistol by either left clicking or right clicking. This causes it to float back to the player by shifting in the direction correspondent to whichever side of the mouse was clicked. It feels a bit wonky and honestly wasn't my favorite aspect as I kept finding the pistol either getting stuck on something or floating behind a wall making it risky to retrieve. Aside from that everything seems to work fine although there's no control settings. The game does at least tell you how to play the game so at least you won't be going in blind.
Graphics:
Obviously inspired by 'SUPERHOT' but definitely looks way cheaper. The game is locked at 60 frames and despite being played on a computer with a 3080 Ti, I still experienced frame drops occasionally. There's even a command prompt that opens up when starting the game that keeps track of the frame rate during gameplay which was odd. The graphics themselves are what you'd expect from a 'SUPERHOT' parody. Everything is whitened with some average shaders and sharp lighting while you, your enemies and the weapons are colored in. Enemies also don't really appear dead, they seemingly turning into mannequins when killed. Seriously, they just roll around like plastic toys and sometimes they're even running while on the floor. It's just comical to see and seeing how this game is a parody, I wouldn't be surprised if it was intentional.
Audio:
Not very good if I have to be honest. There's no music and the sound effects sound cheap. The developers definitely tried their best to replicate the sounds from 'SUPERHOT' but if you played that game, you could definitely tell that it sounded off.
Conclusion:
'UBERCOLD' is an extremely short first person shooter (with no shooting) taking about 20 minutes to complete if you play both regular and hard mode but feel free cut that playtime in half if you settle for just one playthrough. It's a parody of the popular game 'SUPERHOT' but falls short as it doesn't offer much content. You essentially play through a handful of short levels using a single weapon in the form of a pistol boomerang while the world has slow motion mechanics that don't really add much to the game besides ease. It's not terrible but definitely not the best game on the Steam. It'll give the player a sense of what 'SUPERHOT' is like but barely plays like it. It's still not a bad game and for a parody, expectations shouldn't be that of 'SUPERHOT' anyways.
