80's
PixelTrip Studios is now on my black list for ever , but most likely this "studio" is already six feet under has a demonstration that some people better stay away from the video games industry , I'm on a personal war against self made devs that can write on their foreheads "thief" in pink neon tried on both windows 7, windows 8.1 and windows 10 got stucked on the first loading screen for ever!!!!! impossible to play the game!!! devs don't care ... it's been a long time now so this should be taken away from steam , WTF it's now legal to sell something this broken??? Just avoid please !!!! this is the pure definition of cash grab ! there's a switch version that works and also has many languages still your choice to spend money on this after all but... best solution I have found - buy the xbox version !!! it's is playable on xbox one , xbox s/x and PC!!! EXTRA SUPER GLAD AND HAPPY THAT IT HAS BEEN FINALLY REMOVED FROM STEAM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(end November 2022)
Fun little retro game for a small price. Really well made with all the different funny references. Had a lot of fun in this game - 7/10 100% Achievements-Difficulty: I would say Easy, got every achievment in 1.5 hours. Fantastic flashback of the 80's when I was a kid sitting on the floor playing Paper Boy on the NES. Great game, nicely made and fairly addicting.
I figured out how to fix the "LOADING" screen problem, a guide is here: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3282586889
THE VIDEOKID Review
THE VIDEOKID hearkens back to the good old days of the NES Paperboy arcade game with the time-tested mechanics of dodging traffic while tossing mail into mailboxes, trash cans, and even windows. The game also spices things up by adding newer concepts such as a three-lane auto-runner system reminiscent of some mobile indies, and tricking off cars, benches, and mailboxes for bonus points to increase your score, which is arguably the most important thing in any game from the 80's. STORY The story is as simple as it needs to be for an arcade-esque game. Our protagonist, which I call Morty McFowl (due to everything implying a reference that dodges copyright infringement), is out on his daily paper rounds when he checks the time - it's 7:55 (most likely because his clock at home was slow), and he's late for a hot date at the park with his ladyfriend, the aptly-named Jessica. Dodging cars, horror movie freakshows, giant marshmallow ghosts, and other epic 80's things, it is up to the player to decide Morty's fate. Rating: 5 stars out of 5 - Simple means perfect in an arcade throwback. GRAPHICS The graphics of this game are retro-3D styled "box-pixel"-type. Think back to games like Crossy Road, Smashy Road, and any kind of road game that can look as good in 2D as it can in 3D. All of it screams "retro" in a newer updated way. Even the audio itself is retro-styled. Instead of high-quality music and sound, we get muffled voice clips and chip-tuned music. It's the 80's renaissance, ladies and gentlemen, and this rebirth is totally rad! Ratings: Graphics: 4.5 stars out of 5 - "Boxel" style works well for the feel, but some animation (i.e. changing lanes) is too fluid for a retro-styled game. Audio: 4.5 stars out of 5 - Great music, quality works well, but some sound clips are a bit too repetitive and get annoying fast. GAMEPLAY Let's get to the main part of this review. There is a reason the developers call this game a challenge, and it's plain to see why. It is hard. The controls are relatively tight and easy to get used to. You control Morty down a three-laned street, with one of these lanes acting as the sidewalk. The first time you boot up the game, you are taught everything you need to know before you're thrown into the action. The game makes sure to start simple every time you wipe out so you can regain a feel for the controls before you go back to the chaos. It's then a matter of remembering everything the game throws at you so you can do the perfect run. One false move, and it's back to the start for you, butthead. After a wipe-out, the game tallies up your score and earned cash before you choose to either play again, or take a break at the local pro-shop, where you can buy player skins and unlock tubular tricks for your next attempt. All of these are cosmetic, and none of them cost any real money, which drills in the retro feel even further. They don't give you any edge in the main game but if you're playing this for hours and you have the in-game cash, you might as well "treat yaself". The game also has a couple of neat power-ups that give you brief edges, such as being able to jump higher to clear taller obstacles, and the almighty MEGA-GLOVE that makes you auto-fire for a short period of time. Once you've sent enough tapes to their rightful owners and dodged everything the game can throw at you, you'll be brought right to the park for your date. The game is hard, but certain things make it forgiving, such as being able to jump after a grind completes or the aim giving mailboxes the highest priority. The stages are sorted in an ebb-and-flow style to give you some room to breathe before you return to the chaos. Rating: 4 stars out of 5 - Fun and addictive, but has bugs that negatively affect gameplay flow. DRAWBACKS Like any game, there are some flaws that keep it from being perfect, like slow transitions from wipeout-to-next attempt, low variety of powerups, and a few bugs that would make Bethesda want to buy this game out on the spot, but most of it is minor and doesn't disrupt gameplay too much when you know what to look for. SUMMARY Despite its flaws, THE VIDEOKID is an addictive, charming, lightly-funny and satisfying game. From its 80's references to doing tricks, to level progression, it keeps the player in flow and begging for more. After playing and beating it, I believe that this game can bring back the arcade game style, which is something I grew up with, along with many people in my generation. Games like this are the quintessential "video game" in my book - Very low-cost to jump into, super-challenging with high replayability. I rate this game 4.6 stars out of 5. Buy this game and play the hell out of it! Complete it, earn that high score, and don't be late for Jessica!
So much fun.
A good nostalgia trip for paper boy fans
