The Paper Trials

"The Paper Trials" is not a complete game. It's an advertisement/demo, and you have to pay more money through DLC to actually unlock the game. What do you get if you let the deceptive and shady marketing win and pay the DLC toll to unlock the game? The Paper Trials is a first person adventure game with a mild horror theme and using a deprecated DooM like 3D model with 2D sprites overlaid on the world instead of creating 3D models, because game development is too hard for some developers. As is marketing their game ethically by not locking and paygating the entire game behind DLC. It's stylized to look like 2D ink drawing, but this is like 0.005% the quality and content of more professionally developed games like Bendy and the Ink Machine (which I do recommend). What do you do in the game? The story involves you being trapped in a nightmarish maze, with your sole hope for escape being to find all the pages of a mysterious book. Gameplay centers around running from enemies to avoid death. Hiding and standing still are fatal. You need to discover routes through the maze to collect the book pages. But remember... you don't get the full game unless you pay up. And in this case, the full game doesn't even exist! The purpose of this advertisement is to get you to shell out $2 USD to unlock content needed for the full game, and I don't recommend you do that either. Worse, there's the full set of content hasn't even been created as the developer either couldn't be bothered (this wasn't very popular with gamers), or simply lacked the capability to finish what he started. And before we get sympathetic to whatever problems the developer has that caused him to fail, let's first ask why all this incomplete, abandoned, and deceptively/unethically marketed advertising with paygated DLC content is good for gamers... and it's not. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the incompetent amateur developer. As an advertisement, this is only free in the same way that adverts on Youtube and banner ads in your browser are. This is a game demo that's been dumped on Steam to advertise another Steam store page in the hopes of raking in some cash. Just because advertisements are free, doesn't mean they're worth your time. It's important to understand there's a formal process to create a demo/page for a game which hasn't been followed here: https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/store/application/demos While it might seem like an inocuous mistake, publishing demos and advertisements as if they are full games is misleading and in some ways harmful. This advertisement is taking up marketing space and visibility that would be better made available to a developer that's done the right thing and created a full game. Instead, that visibility is given over to a demo/advert that's been published incorrectly and is polluting the marketplace. It's unclear if this mistake was made through incompetence or a deliberate intent to mislead gamers. Often developers may choose to incorrectly publish demo/advertisements as separate games as a cheap way to bypass paying Valve for marketing presence on the Steam front page, which may seem clever to them, but it's harmful behaviour and it's not good for gamers. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 7 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Advertisements and incorrectly published demos don't add +1 to your game collector count, they aren't full games. It's impossible for me to recommend this incorrectly published advertising spam to gamers, you deserve better than adverts.
