When souls boss become aware that they are jokes. Favorite Strikers (May be Psikyo)
Strikers 1945 II, developed by Psikyo and re-released on Steam by City Connection and Zerodiv, is a timeless vertical shoot ’em up that perfectly captures the elegance and intensity of late 1990s arcade design. Originally released in arcades in 1997, the game remains a masterclass in tightly tuned mechanics and escalating challenge, standing as one of the most respected titles in Psikyo’s celebrated shooter lineup. While the Steam version doesn’t reinvent or modernize the formula, it preserves the fast-paced action and sharp control that defined its legacy. What you get is pure, distilled arcade excitement—short bursts of adrenaline-fueled gameplay that demand reflexes, precision, and a sense of rhythm that only a true shmup veteran can appreciate. The premise of Strikers 1945 II is simple yet effective. You choose from a selection of six World War II–inspired fighter planes, each with unique weapon configurations, speed, and special attacks. Once airborne, your goal is to obliterate waves of enemies, collect power-ups to strengthen your firepower, and survive against increasingly complex bullet patterns and screen-filling bosses. The gameplay doesn’t waste time on story or pretense—it’s about the flow of combat, the satisfaction of mastering attack patterns, and the pursuit of high scores. Each plane offers distinct playstyles, with one focusing on speed and mobility while another compensates with heavier weaponry or more potent bombs. The inclusion of a charged “Super Shot,” a signature Psikyo mechanic, adds strategic depth, as it allows you to unleash a powerful focused attack that can turn the tide of battle when used wisely. The difficulty curve is one of the game’s defining features, beginning with manageable encounters before gradually layering on dense bullet spreads and faster enemy movement. Psikyo’s approach to difficulty is renowned for its fairness; while the screen can quickly fill with projectiles, every attack is avoidable with sharp reflexes and deliberate movement. The early levels act as warm-ups, helping you acclimate to your plane’s movement and firing rhythm, but by the midpoint, the game expects mastery. There’s a hypnotic pleasure in learning to weave through impossibly tight spaces, in finding the perfect moment to deploy a bomb, and in achieving a flawless run through pure concentration. The balance between chaos and control is what makes Strikers 1945 II so enduring. It captures the essence of what made arcade shooters addictive—the combination of instant feedback, constant tension, and the relentless push for improvement. Visually, the game exemplifies the height of 2D arcade artistry. The sprites are detailed and fluid, with vibrant explosions, metallic war machines, and massive mechanical bosses that transform mid-battle in spectacular fashion. Each stage is distinct, moving from coastal skirmishes and urban landscapes to high-altitude duels and sci-fi-inspired battlefields that escalate beyond earthly warfare. The transition from traditional aircraft to transforming mecha is one of Psikyo’s signature flourishes, adding a surprising and satisfying absurdity to the otherwise militaristic theme. The Steam version faithfully preserves the original visuals, offering clean pixel rendering and the option to play in the original vertical “TATE” orientation for those seeking a true arcade feel. Though modest by modern standards, the art direction and animation still hold up remarkably well thanks to their clarity and expressiveness. The sound design complements the action with energetic music and sharp, mechanical sound effects that emphasize the impact of every shot and explosion. The soundtrack’s intensity mirrors the pacing of the gameplay—pulsing, rhythmic, and designed to keep you alert. The Steam release enhances the experience with modern conveniences such as achievements, difficulty adjustments, and online leaderboards. These additions give players new incentives to chase perfection and compare their performance with others, bringing an element of competition that keeps the experience alive long after you’ve cleared the main stages. It’s a faithful port that respects the original’s identity, though it doesn’t add much beyond these quality-of-life updates. Despite its many strengths, Strikers 1945 II is not for everyone. Its structure is inherently old-fashioned—there’s no narrative depth, progression system, or extensive variety beyond replaying for better scores. A full playthrough can be completed in under an hour, though the true replay value lies in its high skill ceiling and multiple planes to master. For some, this purity will be refreshing; for others, it might feel limited compared to modern shooters with elaborate modes and unlocks. The Steam port runs smoothly and is generally well-optimized, though some players have noted slight differences in control feel compared to the original arcade hardware. Nonetheless, the game’s simplicity and precision make it timeless rather than outdated, and its core design remains as engaging as ever. Ultimately, Strikers 1945 II is a shining example of arcade craftsmanship—fast, challenging, and endlessly replayable. It thrives on the fundamentals of the genre: precise control, escalating tension, and the satisfaction of mastery. Every stage is a concise lesson in rhythm and reaction, every boss a test of focus and nerve. The Steam release may not offer major new features, but it succeeds in bringing this classic to a new audience without compromising its essence. Whether you’re a veteran shmup enthusiast chasing perfect runs or a newcomer curious about the golden age of 2D shooters, Strikers 1945 II delivers an exhilarating experience that rewards patience, skill, and sheer determination. It’s a reminder of why arcade games like this remain beloved decades later—a compact but endlessly replayable rush of pure, unfiltered action. Rating: 8/10
played this game 20 years ago with my brother, now I can play with him again, and with some friends too. sometimes it crashes when going back to the title, but it usually works fine
10/10 - An exceptional Shoot Em' Up. Probably the best vehicle "The Flying Pancake" in Shoot Em' Up history! The boss designs are some of the best out there.
