书之旅人 Story Walker

Visually this is one of the most unique and beautiful games I've ever played. The developers and artists deserve the highest praise for everything from character sprites to animations to landscape textures - even if I can't read Chinese to save my life, it was so relaxing to walk through peaceful forests and bright sunflower fields, and the way they generated waterfalls and fires was divine. I've never seen this brand of graphics before and I'm in love. Sadly I couldn't progress much because of the language barrier, but if they ever come out with an English translation I'll gladly be the first to play it!

"书之旅人 Story Walker" is a poorly made casual Chinese walking sim adventure/puzzle game thing... you control a little girl, walk around low poly cel shaded cartoony environment with nothing much really to do... I mean the developer themselves tell you to try to stay awake when you play this. I didn't think that would be hard, but yeah I really wanted to go to bed instead of playing this any longer. What do you do in the game? Just walk around and click through badly written Chinese VN text. There's no English translation for the game, but that's okay. The language of bad games is universal. There's an overwhelming amount of mediocre Visual Novel/E-book style cutscenes in this game. The developers failed one of the most basic, fundamental requirements of game design.. "Show, don't tell." So you'll spend a huge amount of time not playing the game, but clicking through endless lines of poorly written VN text cutscenes because the developers couldn't work out how to relate their narrative through the game mechanics, and decided instead it would be better to compete with reading a book for your time. We're here to play games, not read through hours of garbage intersituals. Your gaming rig is not a Kindle. On the important subject of visuals, this features fairly low quality stylised/cartoony low poly 3D graphics. It comes across as the kind of thing you see on mobile phones and Nintendo games, which will deter a lot of PC gamers, understandably. Gaming is a visual medium, and to be considered one of the best games on Steam, the graphics have to be some of the best on Steam. That's not happening here. Next is pricing and what value this has for gamers. This is "free" enough (not every "free" game in the "free" section is truly free, there's usually some hidden price tag), at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good, and the cost of a game is more than just financial, your time is valuable too. A peak of [b]15 concurrent players[/b] (according to SteamDB) for a "free" game is a disastrous public reception. Out of 130 million potential players here on Steam, almost nobody was interested. Even though this is "free". That level of rejection speaks a lot for the quality of the game. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? This is a hard pass. There's no immediate financial commitment, but there are thousands of more compelling games on the platform that will give you a lot more enjoyment for your time.
