Hello, my name is zebaxx, I am a 15-year-old Spanish game developer. I had this nightmare in the summer of 2023. I remember it clearly because I always write down my nightmares when I wake up.
In [Stories to Tell] Greyville Stay I had just gotten home one normal afternoon after a long day, when I suddenly realized that some pretty strange things were happening at home...

Игра '[Stories to Tell] Greyville Stay' оставила смешанные впечатления.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiXUDDSHZ7k YouTube is 💩 is my channel if you like authentic, never faked reactions to horror games. This game really surprised me, it's not long, but for being FREE and made by a 15 year old it was a very impressive effort. I look forward to seeing what this young man can create in the future If you LOVE games similar to this and FEARS TO FATHOM then be sure to check out my Ultimate Playlist with 50 games and growing! https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQTmUby5Dx3i00k2G_j7qILaINagnRUbv

Review – Stories to Tell – Greyville Stay Stories to Tell – Greyville Stay, developed by zebaxx, represents a significant step forward in the evolution of the Stories to Tell series. Expanding upon the atmospheric and psychological foundations established in earlier entries, this installment delivers a more cohesive, immersive, and thematically mature experience. While maintaining the minimalist design philosophy and distinctive VHS-inspired aesthetic that define the series, Greyville Stay refines its execution and demonstrates a growing confidence in both narrative delivery and environmental storytelling. 4 Set within a quiet, seemingly unremarkable lodging environment, Greyville Stay transforms an ordinary location into a space of persistent unease. The choice of setting—a motel or temporary place of residence—introduces a thematic layer centered on transience, anonymity, and vulnerability. Unlike the familiarity of a home or the symbolic weight of a cemetery, this environment exists in a liminal space, neither fully personal nor entirely public. This ambiguity enhances the psychological tension, as the player navigates a place that feels inherently temporary yet increasingly oppressive. The game’s atmospheric design continues to be its most defining strength. The VHS-inspired visual style is further refined here, with more deliberate use of lighting, shadow, and spatial composition. Dimly lit corridors, confined interiors, and subtle visual distortions contribute to a sense of claustrophobia and disorientation. The grainy overlay and analog imperfections are not merely aesthetic choices but integral components of the experience, reinforcing the idea that the player is engaging with something fragmented, unstable, and possibly unreliable. Sound design once again plays a crucial role in shaping the player’s emotional response. Greyville Stay employs a restrained and highly effective auditory approach, utilizing ambient noise, distant echoes, and carefully timed silences to sustain tension. The absence of constant audio feedback allows even the faintest sound to carry significant weight, heightening the player’s awareness of their surroundings. This deliberate pacing ensures that tension is maintained without resorting to excessive or predictable scare tactics, aligning with the series’ emphasis on psychological horror over immediate shock. From a gameplay perspective, the title retains its minimalist structure, focusing on exploration and environmental interaction. However, there is a noticeable improvement in how these elements are integrated. Interactions feel more purposeful, and the progression through the environment is more clearly guided, resulting in a smoother and more engaging experience. While the mechanics remain intentionally simple, they are employed with greater precision, supporting the overall immersion rather than merely serving as functional necessities. Technically, Greyville Stay shows signs of refinement compared to previous entries. Although certain limitations remain—such as occasional stiffness in animations or basic interaction systems—the overall presentation feels more polished. These minor imperfections do not detract from the experience; instead, they often contribute to the subtle sense of unease that permeates the game. The slightly unnatural quality of movement and interaction aligns with the game’s broader aesthetic, enhancing its dreamlike and unsettling tone. A particularly strong aspect of this installment is its environmental storytelling. The game conveys narrative elements through spatial design, object placement, and visual cues rather than explicit exposition. Players are encouraged to interpret their surroundings, constructing meaning from fragmented details and implied context. This approach not only deepens engagement but also reinforces the psychological nature of the experience, as much of the narrative unfolds internally within the player’s interpretation. In terms of pacing, Greyville Stay demonstrates a more controlled and deliberate progression. The tension builds gradually, with each segment contributing to a cohesive emotional arc. This improved pacing reflects a growing mastery of rhythm and structure, ensuring that the player remains consistently engaged without experiencing abrupt tonal shifts. The game’s ability to sustain a continuous sense of unease is a testament to the developer’s evolving skill in crafting psychological horror. Furthermore, Greyville Stay stands out for its tonal consistency and artistic integrity. Every aspect of the game—from its visual presentation to its sound design and gameplay structure—works in harmony to support a unified vision. This cohesion is particularly impressive within the context of independent development, highlighting a clear and focused creative direction. In the broader landscape of indie horror, Greyville Stay distinguishes itself through its commitment to atmosphere and emotional resonance. Rather than relying on familiar tropes or formulaic design, it embraces a more introspective and experiential approach. This results in a game that feels personal, immersive, and memorable, offering a form of horror that lingers beyond the immediate playthrough. Conclusion Stories to Tell – Greyville Stay is a refined and immersive psychological horror experience that builds effectively upon the strengths of its predecessors. Through its carefully crafted atmosphere, improved pacing, and cohesive design, it delivers a compelling and deeply unsettling journey. For players who value subtlety, mood, and psychological depth in their horror experiences, Greyville Stay is highly recommended. It not only reinforces the unique identity of the Stories to Tell series but also demonstrates the developer’s continued growth and potential within the genre.
