About

Startron is an ASCII-based space colony sim where you can mine, harvest, build and automate your way across a procedurally generated cosmos. Lead a crew of sentient cats (or dogs) as they take their first steps out and discover the mysteries of the cosmos.
Build, colonise, then harvest the resources of the cosmos on a truly astronomical scale. Defend your infrastructure from other lifeforms - but try not to endanger the locals.
A sprawling web of interconnected stellar systems awaits you in your own unique cosmos. Binary systems, black holes, wormholes, pulsars & more play host to various hostile and friendly locations!
Each planet, moon, asteroid cluster and gas giant can be modified and manipulated to your needs. All formed from strange compounds which you'll use to your advantage.
Embrace the 90s DOS aesthetic with charmingly retro graphics, including fully 3D environments - all rendered in ASCII (Codepage 437 to be exact)!
Startron is an ongoing effort, with new features being added as and when - and always for free.
Startron has been designed to bring you back to a simpler time - when games had grand scope, but weren't necessarily infinite. The cosmos in Startron is large, but not so large a single person couldn't get to most of it. The planetscapes and moonscapes follow a similar philosophy where there's plenty of space to do what you need, but not so much that it feels irrelevant. We hope we've got the balance just right!
The art style was chosen for similar reasons, as we found it affords players (and developers alike) more creative control to produce something truly wonderous.

It is criminal that this game is free. It's pretty open-ended, has a great visual style (especially with the 3D environments), and is honestly just a treat all around. Free here really means free – no ads, no monetization, just download the game for free and get the entire experience up-front. I wish more games were like this.
litteraly every review is positive, ive played .3 hours but like so much potential in such little time and free?? full universe generation?? full ascii interiors??? very excited to play more once time allows
I love this game, I just wish everything wasn't hardcore death mode. There's no manual saving, and with the randomness of the game, it's entirely possible to get soft locked while out traveling by some random system on your ship breaking and not being able to repair it. When this happens, you have to start your game over from scratch. Starting over is fine on short play games like roguelikes, but on a long play game where you are building up an empire across many stars, it sucks losing all that progress because your ship breaks down in a system without a station with a parts vendor, or running out of fuel in a system without any way to purchase fuel. Just remember dev, not all of us want to play hardcore mode. A manual save system would be nice.

I'm absolutly hooked, this game is fantastic! The ascii graphic is an artistic choice, but very nicely done, i love the intro screen with random planets. For walking in stations (which is 3D), i set the graphic to chunky, this makes it less detailed but less annoying, also i disabled 3D shading, because that makes those ugly, vertical black lines. The game is much deeper, complex and detailed than it looks and i'm sure, with their few hours playtime most of the other reviewers never saw them. First you just flying around, learning the basics. Later you makes a mining -> refinery -> factory production line to get some cash. You mine resources and buy them to repair your ship, you buy ship addons to make your life easier (but you need a place where they can install them!). You will find black holes, binary systems,
lost colonies
, etc. Sooner or later you find out there is a story in this game and you lost in the details. There are
warring factions,

pirates,

space creatures,

ancient and forgotten places
,
super weapons,

terraformers
and
probably a way into another universe
. You can play card game or video games in the bar also there is a bounty hunting, but i didn't tried that yet. As far as i can see, everything in the game has its meaning and place, like there is a pest, which creates something which cannot be found elsewhere. The in-game cosmic database is helpful, but still you have to figure out _everything_. Also some information is redacted, you have to figure out how to see them. The game is rather relaxing, its difficulty comes from the figuring out part, but that makes it so good. Also i can't stop exploring the galaxy, it is too much fun! :)
ascii/nonmouseable UI isn't necessarily my cup of tea, but this showed up in my queue and i respect the passion put into it--its cool. might check it out more later on in its development cycle. the framework is impressive, and its free
I think this might be to space sims/4x games what Dwarf Fortress and rimworld were to colon builders.
This game is beautiful i really enjoy the aesthetic
Really really cool and groovy. Walking around a world rendered in ASCII, seeing the sunrise, is so trippy. It activates all the neurons that feel new things. The music is great, and there is so much soul and cuteness in it as well. It focuses on the fun of exploration and automation. (Something that modern competitors often miss!) I totally recommend it, from someone who's played a LOT of space games.
Despite only having barely over an hour of play time, and despite this game's version being quite far from 1.0, I wanted to drop a review to help boost the algo. I'm blown away by the ambition of the dev. The game is basically sci-fi Dwarf Fortress but with graphics that includes both 1st person and various zoom levels of 3rd person. Given how active the dev is, I'm torn between wanting to explore the game now vs letting the dev cook up a more complete package first. Even if the dev were to abandon this game today, I'd still recommend any indy game connoisseur to poke around it for a little while due to how novel and intriguing it all is.
The depth and effort on display here is astounding. I really look forward to seeing how it updates with time and I haven't even gotten fully into the depths of it still. This is truly a magnum opus of a text-based game.
