A 100% playthrough takeaways: Starfield is more of the same from Bethesda but regresses in many ways it shouldn't. It misses the mark on Bethesda's unique strengths and lacks staying power, disappointing but delivers the classic loop without much innovation. Strengths: - Engaging, well-paced questlines & sidequests with solid outcomes - Believable & compelling setting/lore/story - Improved dialogue + gameplay feel from Fallout 4 - Nice gameplay variety, good shipbuilding system Midpoints: - Standard, predictable modern gear system - Fine roleplay setup - Return of a perfectly flawed, as always, trait & background system - Powers are solid; weirdly implemented unlocks & exhausting, repetitive progression Weaknesses: - Poorly balanced Skills system that is too heavy, punishing and limiting - One-note, poorly scaled ship combat despite a cool ship builder - Inconsequential commerce system - Homogenous companion cast - Meaningless, underutilized POIs that might as well not exist, taking up too much time & space over Bethesda’s strong, crafted environments - Useless player homes & outposts - Melee combat & weapons might as well be nonexistent I thought factions/questlines were good. My ranking is: 1. UC Vanguard – My favorite for its nuance, worldbuilding and “runaway problem” urgency that kept things moving quickly. 2. Freestar Rangers – Great lore/worldbuilding and a punchy delivery of “setting an old record straight” that reminds you the world existed before you. 3. Ryujin Industries – Solid espionage/deception, but overstays its welcome. Quick & hard lessons feel bang-on with good rewards, but the heavy conclusion never materializes in the game world. 4. Crimson Fleet/SysDef –The stakes compel, but characters don’t. I walked away wondering why I didn’t get my “Do it Myself” option to ditch both factions. A major sticking point for me is the terrible companions. One-dimensional judges & managers with blind convictions and double standards make for an easy choice to fly solo. Ranking the companion cast: 1. Barrett - Personable, nuanced. Jarring romance, hard to believe. 2. Sam - Compassionate - but dissonantly judging. Good writing on the "masculinity" topic. 3. Andreja - Extremely weird relationship. Hard to match the dark secret, questionable past character with the alarmingly trusting romance and "rules for thee, but not for me" attitude. 4. Sarah - One dimensional condescending cliche. Confrontational, rude, naive, with a jarring romance and a quest that should've been part of her monthly therapy session, not the Starborn's problem.
Skyrim with guns in space bro
Le multivers. 1.
One of the worst games ive played so far
Starfield feels like AI slop that somehow got released before anyone remembered to add actual human emotion. And the worst part is that I genuinely wanted to love it. I went in expecting Skyrim in space. Instead, I got a giant sterile galaxy full of characters who sound like the voice actors were reading lines from an Excel sheet five minutes before lunch. No energy. No emotion. No personality. Just NPCs standing perfectly still, staring into your soul with that classic Bethesda expression while delivering dialogue that sounds like it was written by someone who has never heard two actual human beings speak to each other. And here's the really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ annoying part: Skyrim also had bad voice acting sometimes. Skyrim also had a story that was hardly Shakespeare. Skyrim was also technically held together with duct tape, hope and community mods. But Skyrim had a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ soul. You could leave a city, see a mountain in the distance and think: “♥♥♥♥ it. I’m going there.” And then you actually went there. No galaxy map. No constant teleporting. No loading screen every time you breathe too hard. No feeling that your “adventure” is actually a collection of separate rooms connected by menus. Starfield desperately wants to sell you the fantasy of exploring space while constantly reminding you that you’re still playing a Bethesda game built out of loading screens. That is probably what pisses me off the most. No Man’s Sky figured out years ago that if your whole game is about space exploration, maybe it is important to actually let the player feel like they are travelling through ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ space. You get into your ship. You take off. You leave the atmosphere. You fly somewhere else. You land. You feel like you actually went somewhere. Starfield? Open map. Click. Loading. Land. Loading. Enter building. Loading. Leave building. Loading. Get into ship. Another ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ loading screen. At some point you have to ask: Does nobody at Bethesda see how ridiculous this feels? Loading screens themselves are not the problem. The problem is that when you sell me the fantasy of exploring a massive universe, I would really like to feel like I am actually MOVING THROUGH that universe. Not teleporting between ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ rooms. And then there are the planets. Huge. Empty. Sterile. Procedurally stretched out so Bethesda can tell you how massive the game is while giving you almost no reason to actually explore most of it. Half the time Starfield feels less like a finished RPG and more like a tech demo somebody desperately tried to glue quests onto before release. Then I think about Skyrim. A game from 2011. And somehow I still enjoy exploring that world more than this giant galaxy released over a decade later. That is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ problem. Skyrim was broken. The animations were wooden. The combat could be hilariously stupid. The same five voice actors apparently populated half the continent. But when you found a cave, an abandoned house, some weird ruin or a random path through the mountains, it actually felt like you had discovered something. Starfield too often feels like I discovered another ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ asset. Another outpost. Another empty chunk of land. Another building that looks suspiciously like the last building I visited twenty hours ago. And that is exactly why The Elder Scrolls VI scares the ♥♥♥♥ out of me now. Because if Bethesda looks at Starfield and thinks: “Yep. More of this, but with swords.” Then we are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ doomed. Todd Howard can talk about ambition, technology and the future of RPGs as much as he wants. I just hope Bethesda remembers why people loved Skyrim in the first place. It was not because Skyrim was technically perfect. It absolutely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ wasn’t. People loved it because it had atmosphere. Identity. Mystery. A world you actually wanted to get lost in. Starfield gives me a thousand planets and somehow manages to make the universe feel smaller than Skyrim. That might be the biggest ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ irony of the entire game. Bethesda built a whole galaxy and forgot to fill it with a reason to care. So please, for The Elder Scrolls VI: Not bigger. Not more procedural. Not another thousand kilometres of empty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Give me one world that actually feels alive. Give me characters who sound like they have blood in their veins. Give me places I remember. Give me a reason to walk somewhere instead of opening another ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ menu. Because if TES VI ends up being Starfield with swords and dragons, I am going to lose my ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mind.
