Great game not too long just quite right
it's Xcom but Star Wars, what's not to love?
(*Prix Day One.) WTF ! Si vous voulez un Star Wars XCOM very, very lite, attendez qu’il soit à 20 € grand maximum.
highly recommend. The story is fantastic. The voice acting is award winning, and the characters all have their own personalities. I wish it had it available to keep playing PAST the storyline, other than having to play it again.
love this game, little buggy and lags a bit but the gameplay is good enough for me to ignore those issues.
TL:DR. A meh mix between Mass Effect and X-COM. Worst than both. Buy if discounted and you're really bored. What I like: Firstly It's TBS and secondly it have the Star Wars background - although even the aging SWTOR have incomparably more to offer. What I dislike: Limited class development. Strange and rather useless skill tree. Forcing players to use with a limited pool of characters - you can hire more but you don't have time to max their skills and you'll miss some "unique" abilities. The rush - you HAVE to do the missions or else, making the game very short. The story - not much of it, something a 6 year old can write in an afternoon. The weapons selection - whole game feels like the first week in X-COM. Limited Den development. Some mandatory and unavoidable missions are absurdly hard. The fact that they tried to copy X-COM (brazenly) but ends doing such a sloppy job - and even so the game feels hurried up to release. The small and pointless maps, the soldiers movement options... and many more. And, in the end... it's bleak. You run through a dirty and colorless galaxy. Again, if the headlines say "an X-COM experience" don't believe the hype - it's far from it, although the Chimera Squad was... well, another scam. It can become a jaw-dropping TBS, even an X-COM replacement? Well yes, it can, in time maybe, but it will ask for a lot of work and some radical changes. Oh, I forgot: some dedicated people had put together a set of mods who can alleviate some of those problems... and I appreciate their work but even so the base game didn't help them much.
This is an absolute 10/10 for every Star Wars and XCOM fan! The game is connected to the bigger Star Wars universe without forcing it, regularly hinting at stories you already know and love. Gameplay loop is fun, and customization options are great. However, there are still some annoying bugs with the AI sometimes. But: If you're not the biggest Star Wars fan and just want a new XCOM, you probably shouldn't buy this game. It is less complex and can feel a bit clunky when directly compared.
It's not perfect. The base management systems and the black market/utilities/weapon add ons all feel a bit perfunctory... but the core gameplay is solid, the voice acting is excellent, and the main storyline is a worthy addition to Star Wars lore. I don't think this will have the same replay value as XCom2 (although maybe if it can be modded akin to Long War) but I'd love to see what the studio could do with a sequel...if they get their jobs back.
Solid so far.
Lots of variety of character types. Favorite characters are Jae and Trick and my MC so far. There are some neat additions as the game progresses too but I haven't gotten them all figured out yet. I'm a little worried I'll get tired of the main threat at some point, but that's more of a "me" problem than the game's I think.
Tentative rating: 8.5/10.
The voice acting, and writing are high-quality. The game takes itself more seriously than some Star Wars movies did. Not the hottest take, because Star wars has some stinkers. The combat mechanics are stronger than the orginal XCOM (which I enjoyed, but only as an intro to XCOM-like games). I don't know how complex XCOM 2 got but I heard it had a lot of bells and whistles too. Perhaps Zero company is on par to that? No clue, but it's been pretty generous with the number of tools it has thrown at me early on.
How it runs
I've had one freeze, and some load screen stuttering, but the game runs well on my PC, but I do run a pretty nice setup.
Great game, fun to play and a very engaging story.
