4 out of 5 stars from me. Goota love this game. Awesome when playing via LAN / Internet with family members or friends. Hardmode is what keeps me coming back and continuing. Only up until YUKON region by now...and already 599h on record... omg :-). There's one thing the developer didn't yet fix on his own - but luckily the community is able to do such things: There's a bug which creates a lag all like 5 minutes or so for about 2 seconds...and makes you loose control over your vehicle sometimes... this can (especially in hardmode) be deadly and may be very frustrating when happening in the wrong moment. But there's a very small community patch for this which works perfectly well: https://www.reddit.com/r/snowrunner/comments/pt78i8/i_fixed_the_stuttering_issues_where_your_throttle/ Have fun. I very much love this game. Just one thing I would like to see improved or changed: Add more life or other vehicles into the areas over time...so you get the feeling of recreating a zone and ppl moving in...
I played this game for the first time around 5 years ago and really did not enjoy it at first. I originally thought it would be a simple driving sim, similar to Euro Truck or American Truck Simulator. If you go into this game expecting that, you probably won't have a great experience. I then tried the game again around a year ago and absolutely fell in love with it.
What SnowRunner is all about
SnowRunner is all about transporting cargo from one place to another through very realistic, physics-based deformable terrain (dirt, mud, gravel, rocky roads, rivers, snow, ice, etc.) across multiple countries and regions. You drive at exceptionally slow speeds, trying not to get stuck or flip your truck. The game features tons of different regions based on locations all over the world. They are beautifully designed, and each features its own unique challenges. The regions are split up into different maps (usually 4) that are separated by tunnels. Usually, one or two of those maps have a garage where you can store and upgrade your trucks, as well as purchase or sell trailers. Sometimes, a location doesn't have the type of cargo you need for a local delivery. When that happens, you have to drive through a tunnel to another map, pick up the cargo, and drive back to deliver it. If you have a trailer, you also have to drive back to the garage to return it. All of this must be done without tipping over, running out of fuel, getting too damaged, or getting completely stuck. If you do get stuck, you can use the "recover" feature to teleport back to the last used garage, but that also means you lose your cargo.
Trucks and cargo game mechanics
The game features tons of officially licensed trucks with highly detailed 3D models, animations, and sound design. They all have their own strengths and utilities. Trucks are split into multiple categories: Highway, Heavy Duty, Heavy, Offroad, and Scout. Each truck can be upgraded, whether it's the engine, suspension, gearbox, or attachments. All trucks have their own weaknesses, and most don't feel completely overpowered. Attachments are one of the most important things in SnowRunner. Every piece of cargo takes up a specific amount of slots (basically the amount of space it occupies). For example, a pallet of bricks only takes up 1 cargo slot, while concrete slabs take up 2 slots, and a container of drilling equipment takes up 4 slots. Most back attachments on trucks have either 2 or 3 cargo slots. If you need to transport something that consumes more slots, you need to get a trailer. This is only a very brief explanation of the game. It is beautifully executed, and I love most of the ideas it brings to the table. Performance was flawless for me (though I do have a pretty high-end system). I never really ran into bugs, and the game runs perfectly on Linux. The graphics are gorgeous and still hold up to 2026 standards, in my opinion.
The criticisms
The only real criticisms I have are that there isn't much cargo variation in the base game, and unlocking new trucks without buying DLC can be an annoying grind. The game also has many DLCs that honestly aren't that great, and I would advise looking into them a bit more before buying. Another issue is that while the maps look incredibly beautiful, you don't always experience much of them because you'll mostly stick to the same efficient routes. This means the different regions can feel quite repetitive over time. Some of the trucks also just don't really feel worth the effort. A few are unlocked quite late in the game but are objectively worse than trucks you unlocked much earlier. All in all, the game is extremely relaxing while still being very challenging. The beauty of hauling heavy cargo with a massive vehicle through the sun-drenched mud will always bring me back to SnowRunner—even after rage-quitting because my truck tipped over right at the end of a mission.
Fantastic game! Excellent graphics and mechanics! I love playing this with my Husband!
