Reviews
Overall, I enjoyed the game. This is a pretty standard one for a 2D pixelly adventure game/interactive fiction. The game also uses pretty simple mechanics, but the overall gameplay is fine considering how much it costs. The plot is compelling enough, the mini side quests for gaining achievements is cute, and while the romance and dialogue can be a little juvenile, the characters still have some nuance to offer as the story develops. This is a very "sunshine one" loves "grumpy one" vibe. Note that content is censored -- so if you're looking for something a little more graphic this is like PG-13ish. As for content warnings, one of the characters is disabled, and sometimes there's some ableist language, but on the flip side there's also some language that leans towards disability justice as well. There are some mild to heavier mental health moments that pop up, too, so I'd be careful about playing if you're sensitive to that. And lastly, sometimes the consent factor felt *a bit*... dubious. Since it's still fairly new there are some translations mishaps in a few places when you use the English settings but it's like 95% accurate and you can understand what is trying to be communicated -- so I didn't think it took away from the experience, but occasionally you'll see a little Korean/Hangul slip in or some words that grammatically are a little off. Additionally, there are a few sticky points that were a bit annoying. Namely, the auto text function does not really work, or it didn't for me, so anytime I wanted to multitask and have dialogue run through, I had to click through it anyways. Also, it's easy to overwrite files because there is no stop gap to say "Are you sure you want to overwrite this save file?" So there were a couple times where I meant to load, and I overwrote files and had to go through the excruciating process of re-playing sections with no fast skip text option.
I remember stumbling across this game a couple of months ago on Twitter and sticking with it because it had a relationship dynamic I liked, and I'm glad I did! The game was a lot of fun, and I really liked seeing Aron and Rico's relationship develop. On top of all this, I'm super glad there was an Epilogue, it really added to my enjoyment of this game.
🎮 Gameplay & Genre SIONIC LOVE is a choice-driven story game with light exploration elements, using a simple JRPG-style overworld that feels reminiscent of older Pokémon-era design. Movement is basic, interactions are straightforward, and progression comes from visiting locations, triggering conversations, and making choices that branch toward different endings. There are five endings total, and I played for just over six hours and saw two major endings. That gave me a solid sense of the game’s structure and emotional range. Mini-games exist but feel more like small supporting activities than major systems. I also unlocked around 75% of the achievements during those two routes, so there is a decent amount to see without the game becoming a grind. Mechanically, it is quite simple, but it is also thoughtfully put together and clearly made with care. I especially appreciated that this is not just another standard VN. The M/M space badly needs more developers willing to try different structures and styles, even on a smaller scale, and I enjoyed seeing this game reach a little beyond the usual format. 🔥 M/M Content This is firmly an MLM game with a clear romantic and sexual focus between Rico and Aron. The relationship leans into a familiar dynamic of a bigger, more hardened bad-boy jock type in Aron (late 20s) paired with a smaller, sweeter twink in Rico (mid 20s). That contrast is clearly part of the appeal, and the game uses it in a way that feels intentional rather than incidental. The relationship is also built around two young men who are emotionally and sexually inexperienced, and that shapes a lot of how the intimacy is written. The sex scenes are explicit, but they feel more rooted in awkward discovery than in polished fantasy. There is genuine affection here, and both characters do develop real feelings for each other, which helps the relationship land as sincere rather than purely erotic. Consent is probably the area that may raise the most questions for some players. I can understand why some comments have read parts of the sexual content as feeling nonconsensual, especially because Aron is quite assertive and Rico verbally resists at points. For me, it read more like two inexperienced people fumbling through intimacy and the writing not always communicating that dynamic as clearly or gracefully as it could have. That does not erase the discomfort some players may feel, but I do think the intent is emotional and romantic rather than coercive. There is not much body diversity here beyond that contrast. Aron is the more muscular, conventionally sturdy lead, while Rico is visibly slimmer and more twink-coded. Overall, the M/M content is sweet, emotionally sincere, and definitely central to the game. 🎨 Visuals & Style The game is visually modest but appealing. The CGs and cutscenes are drawn with care, even if they are not especially polished, and the overall presentation feels earnest rather than flashy. The overworld and general visual design are fairly basic, but they work. In some ways that simplicity suits the game. It gives SIONIC LOVE a small-scale indie feel that matches the scope of the story. Nothing here is cutting-edge, but it is cohesive and clearly made with intention. 🗣️ Tone & Writing The writing is sweet, heartfelt, and easy to connect with, even if it sometimes feels a little simple in its emotional delivery. I do not mean that as a put-down. This feels like a game that is reaching sincerely for tenderness, and I found that more endearing than frustrating. What worked best for me was the emotional contrast between the two endings I saw. One is incredibly upsetting and genuinely traumatic in tone, while the other is warm, romantic, and capped with a very satisfying epilogue. That contrast gave the story more weight than I expected going in. The game may not be the most sophisticated thing you will ever play, but it has heart, and that counts for a lot. 👍 Best Thing Its biggest strength is its sincerity. The relationship between Rico and Aron feels emotionally genuine, and the contrast between the good and bad endings I played through gives the story and your choices real impact. 👎 Worst Thing The writing around intimacy can be a little awkward at times, especially in how it handles consent and inexperience, and that may pull some players out of the romance. ⭐ Final Verdict SIONIC LOVE is a simple but heartfelt MLM game that does a lot with modest tools. It is basic in some respects, but it is clearly made with care, the central relationship is sweet, and I always appreciate seeing developers in this space try something beyond the usual visual novel format. It has rough edges, but I enjoyed it overall and came away glad I played it.

Sionic Love approaches it differently. Here, love is not the destination; rather, it is what allows the characters to keep going on while everything around them threatens to fall apart. Aron begins his journey carrying an enormous emotional burden. His determination to fulfil his mission never falters, yet it is clear that determination alone is not enough: that is where Rico becomes the emotional center of the story. Despite Aron's guarded personality and understandable distrust of strangers, Rico never attempts to force his way into his life. Instead, he patiently learns how to approach someone whose first instinct is always to protect himself. Watching that trust develop gradually became one of my favourite aspects of the visual novel. What I appreciated most is that their relationship never feels like something that exists separately from the main story. Rico does not remove his fears, nor does he magically heal his trauma. Rather, he gives Aron something equally important, a love that helps him deal with emotional trauma in a safe and supportive way. I found that idea surprisingly touching because it extends well beyond romance. Whether through family, friendship or love, the game reminds us how much easier life becomes when we no longer feel we have to face it alone. The mystery surrounding the story unfolds at a satisfying pace. There were moments where I could anticipate certain developments, but several endings still managed to surprise me, particularly outside the main route. More importantly, the emotional reactions throughout the story felt believable. Characters' actions reflect fear, anxiety, kindness and vulnerability in ways that feel recognisably human. If I had one small criticism, it would simply be that I wanted more time with these characters before the story reached its final act. The relationship between Aron and Rico never felt rushed, but I would have happily spent longer watching it grow before the larger conflicts took centre stage. That, however, speaks more to how invested I became than to any fundamental weakness in the writing. Representation - ★★★★★ Sionic Love presents its romance with remarkable sincerity. Aron and Rico could not be more different on paper. Aron appears physically strong but emotionally guarded, while Rico initially comes across as gentler and more vulnerable, only to reveal an inner resilience that holds the relationship together. Neither character feels reduced to a stereotype and both are allowed moments of strength and weakness throughout the story. The "supernatural" abilities never overshadow the people using them. Instead, they become another part of the world the characters inhabit, naturally woven into both the narrative and the emotional conflicts without ever feeling like a gimmick. Gameplay - ★★★★★ One of the game's greatest strengths is how much variety it offers. Rather than asking the player to simply click through dialogue for twenty-five hours (at least at my playing pace), Sionic Love constantly changes its rhythm. Exploration, shops, small puzzles, battles and other interactive sequences can be found between story scenes, giving the experience the feel of a classic RPG rather than a conventional visual novel. Player choice also matters. A single decision can dramatically alter the direction of the story and with six different endings there is plenty of incentive to return and explore different possibilities. The result is a visual novel that remains engaging not only because of its writing, but because it continually gives the player something new to do. Art & Direction - ★★★★★ The presentation is one of the game's most distinctive qualities. Its retro aesthetic immediately evokes the atmosphere of the original Game Boy era while still incorporating enough modern design choices to avoid feeling like simple nostalgia. It strikes a lovely balance between old and new, giving the game an identity that immediately stands apart from most visual novels. The CGs are fewer than in many titles of a similar length, but they are used effectively and often remain on screen long enough to fully develop the scene. One sequence in particular, Aron and Rico casually riding a motorbike together, perfectly captures how well the game allows seemingly ordinary moments to strengthen their relationships. The soundtrack deserves equal praise. Combined with the understated presentation, it creates an atmosphere that feels nostalgic without becoming too sentimental. Do I recommend it? Absolutely, especially for lovers of the indie/retro game boy graphics! Sionic Love understands that love is not something that suddenly fixes broken people. Instead, it shows how caring for someone, and allowing yourself to be cared for, can give you the strength to face challenges that once felt impossible to bear alone. Its blend of heartfelt writing, meaningful choices, varied gameplay and distinctive retro presentation creates something that feels refreshingly different within the BL visual novel space. More than anything, it reminded me that some of the strongest relationships are not built by rescuing one another, but by choosing to keep walking forward together.
