Fantastic game and a great update to the original. They have added some great quality of life features to the game.
quite the fun game, can take some time getting into
its an alright space sim at best get it on sale or free, it has mods like star wars that make the game worthwhile and enjoyable. steep learning curve typical of 4X games, its harder to learn and much different than Stellaris in terms of complexity of gameplay, although there's a lot more political government/species customization in paradox games; which means i haven't really played this game as much but likely will someday.
Underrated as f... I can only recommend it.
Nice minor upgrade from the first game. Worth maybe 20 usd on sale. The DLCs are ridiculous and show what they were going for. Cut all the new stuff out of the new game and drip feed it back in at 30 usd a pop. It's a desperate cash grab. If your just looking to play a more updated version of the first game then get on deep sale. Otherwise don't bother it's not worth it.
I've been playing Sins of a Solar Empire since it first came out in 2008, and it's been my favorite RTS (4X) since the first time I picked it up. When Stardock announced a sequel, I was very excited, and I can happily say the game lived up to my expectations, although it still has some areas that have room for improvement. If you like games like Civilization or Stellaris, you'll probably like this one. Pros: - Beautiful graphics, the ship designs are captivating and the weapon effects are visually distinct and impressive at scale. I can just sit around and watch ships shoot at each other for hours. - There's a lot of options for game modes, and a lot of paths for victory. You don't have to just gun down your opponents, you can wall up and go econ, or you can negotiate alliances. You can change the victory conditions so it's not just about destroying your opponents base, such as going for 50% colonization, or achieving certain objectives. - The factions offer a lot of uniqueness and different gameplay styles, which makes them more interesting, and have a lot of room for skill expression. - The tech trees are complicated, but not in an overwhelming way, so they feel satisfying to traverse. - The developers are active and listen to community feedback. The game has already a significant amount of updates and improvements. The cons: - The AI is really dumb. Even on the highest difficulties and on defensive strategies, it will always carry out of the same all-in strategies every game. If you can fend off their early rush, you will win. It does not seem to understand the advantage of defensive structures or retreating before it's getting absolutely crushed in a battle. - There is a lot to learn. This is expected of most of 4X and RTS games, but there are some terms and functions that aren't really explained well by the game's UI. I learned the most by going to the official game website and reading their guides. - Balance issues. Some of the faction tech and ship/planet upgrades seem like a trap. I never feel they are worth the cost, and it seems like they exist to pad out the tree to feel larger than it really is. Luckily, the balance across factions feels pretty good. - There's not really a single player campaign story. There are solo scenarios you can play, but don't expect any kind of fully voice acted or narrative like other popular titles in the genre.
Stays very true to Sins 1. I like the exotic resources, added some needed depth. All without having one CPU core pulling so much power my lights dim. Now it has multi core support :)
It's already way better than Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion which is saying a lot because they nailed it with the original game and all the DLC. You can tell the devs are passionate about this game and they want to get it right no matter how much work that entails. It launched in a very rocky state on Steam but I bought it to show my support anyways as I loved the OG Sins Rebellion so I had trust in Ironclad and that trust paid off. They have overhauled basically every system since the steam launch and are finally in a place where everything for the foundation of this game is solid and now they can start building out which is really exciting. If you liked the original then you'll love this one and if you didn't play the OG then if a space 4x RTS made by a passionate developer sounds like something that's up your alley then this will not dissapoint.
Gameplay 8/10 Atmosphere 9/10 Music 7/10 Graphics 9/10 Replayability 8/10 Overall 8/10 Fun game, upgrade for the most part, tracking turrets is so cool, But the biggest problem right now is the AI its a bit meh. If they can improve the AI this game will be a solid 9/10!
Game takes too long to learn and a single match can take hours to finish. Overall high barrier to entry and hard to master.
