I have very mixed feeling about this game. This will be a moderatly deep review as i didn't have the patience to keep playing. First of all, the tutorial. The tutorial this game has works against you. I have gotten more info on how to play by looking at what buttons i should press in settings than from the tutorial. I have never been one to criticize how a game looks, however im a big fan of dark, gloomy and bloody fantasy settings like this one. Enemy designs are pretty cool especially when they die. Love the ambiance. The combat in this game is not good. You have 5 basic actions that you can perform in combat: light attack, heavy attack, rolling, guarding(blocking) and parrying. Each one of these feel surprisingly smooth(dare i say) when performing correctly BY ITSELF. HOWEVER if it doesnt feel good together whats the point. The "Dance" as souls fans call it is extremly unfair. Like unfair mods for Elden Ring levels of unfair. ALL enemies in the game have infinite stamina, and in this game, enemies having infinite stamina forces the player to fight all the enemies in a room before proceeding, sometimes it works to run past them sometimes it doesnt. Fighting more than 1 enemy at a times means certain death. And im most rooms, there is more than 1 enemy, which paired with the fact that they have infinite stamina, makes for a very unfun time. The bosses. I have gotten to 2 bosses in this game, the first knight and the fourth. The fourth knight fight was extremly frustrating. The boss is extremly centered around parrying, which is extremly hard to land (partially because tutorial doesnt teach you how to), and when you do land it, sometimes it doesnt even do the damage part, just the stunning. Attacks are extremly poorly telegraphed to the point where its literally rock paper scrissors. So i "git gud" and get him down to hald health (on my ~15 try) and he spawns another one of himself. Did i mention this boss had infinite stamina like all the enemies AND he has no punishable attacks so have fun with that. By far the biggest hiccup of this game is stamina. Doing anything costs stamina (besides walking of course) and a lot of stamina at that. Fighting bosses that have big aoe moves and infinite stamina with unpunishable attacks is not fun. Did i mention running out of stamina means theres a really high chance of getting hit because your movement speed is decreased and you can perform no actions. If this felt more like a rant than thorough review, im sorry i couldnt keep my thoughts together. TLDR: Enemies and bosses have infinite stamina meaning fighting more than one at a time is certain death and every action costs too much stamina.
Shrouded in Sanity is a Souls Series inspired Rogue like/ Metroidvania set in a bloodborne-esque mansion. Very “gothic” architecture in the game itself. Initially the controls are hard to figure out on your own. However there are circles on the ground that are brighter than their surroundings that act as tutorials, helpful messages, or simple lore passages. The controls using a keyboard are very counter-intuitive, more over the Xbox controllers work very well. The “torch” system a “lantern” powered by “battery acid” is an interesting concept for extra light in an otherwise properly lit mansion. When you are able to “Sync Watch”, this allows you to save your current progress. The music is epic, operatic. Like an adrenal shot to your adventure muscle. Finally the leveling system consists of several collectibles such as Yth Stones (can be used for hp increase, stamina, sharpening your sword), Vitae (or souls/blood depending on which previous titles you have played, and Cal .33 (bullets for your offhand weapon). Unfortunately the way the NPCS “see” you is a little wonky. The lag time between connection and miss is abundant. Any light shined towards an enemy will have them react negatively and they will begin to initiate combat. In short, it’s a great homage to the souls series, as well as the 32bit era of gaming. Short, Violent, Sweet.
