I 100% this game on Gamepass, bought it here to 100% it again
uhhh.... this game's pixel art looks really good. why did i find myself skipping through dialogue and laughing at the bad writing and just not caring, basically from the very start? something is very off on this one, and i also just do not care enough to figure out and articulate what. very strange. it felt like people telling me that avatar airbender was good, and when watching, makes me question my own validity because it was so bad. McAnime, meet McJRPG. like a cheap, shallow take by passionate fans that.. dont... quite.. get it. so, hard to say this because they obviously put a lot of effort into all of this game, but this game... just ISNT good. like there's a haze across the entire game, from the very start, and i cant quite put my finger on it, but it's like the developer didnt quite love the game or thought they could take shortcuts in everything or just ineptitude or something. which obviously isnt entirely fair, but that's kind of how it feels like. like the x-factor is mysteriously absent in *everything*.
it's good, the DLC is good, buy this
Fun, but I hate Garl.
I stopped playing when I learned you have to treasure hunt shells to get the "true ending." One of the dumbest game mechanics you can make for a "true ending" is making people do pointless treasure hunts that don't seem to have any function other than to waste your time. There are 60 of them. You will be required to backtrack to find them all. You might as well make the "true ending" of Dragon Quest games gated behind having to find all the gold medals. Don't waste my time. They named the game wrong, because it's more about a sea of shells. Not stars.
My gambling addict friend said if I post a review on Sea of Stars: Sunset Edition and it gets 350 likes and 150 Awards that he will buy me a case of beer, some vodka, and bottle of wine.. So I'm just gonna leave this here..
Gameplay Honestly great, I really liked the turn based combat, and the timed hits/blocks system makes it so battles have some agency beyond just picking the right moves at the right time, but that is the extent to where it goes, if you expect something like the Mario and Luigi series where you can actually dodge this isnt it, but it is solid enough for me to recommend it to you if you look for a experience close to it. Music The music is good, with some standout pieces close to exceptional, there is no song in this game that I would describe as bad, and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it alongside playing the game and the OST matched the Vibes closely Visuals Really beautiful, thats literally how I feel, as someone born in the 2000's I wasn't around when Pixel Art was widespread, but I still have some fond Childhood memories of playing tloz: The Minish Cap on my gameboy and this game just kinda brings me back to those times, the visuals are incredible and the Devs use some post processing to enhance and make the art shine even more.
!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!

!SOME SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD I GUESS!

!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!WARNING!
Story Oh dear god what did they do/j
But anything has something it doesnt do well, and with Sea of stars its unfortunately the story. I don't wanna be all doom and gloom but I will still be honest, its... servicable and that exactly is the problem. Its not bad but it also sadly isnt exactly good either. Characters, and even moreso the two Solstice Warriors, just feel incredibly one dimensional. Of course its not all bad, and there were moments that did get an emotional response out of me but oh my god were there also some frustrating moments.

Yet despite everything, there are characters I thoroughly enjoyed, Garl is my boy for example. Hes just great and I love him. Moraine also was great because HE ACTUALLY ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ DEVELOPS AS A CHARACTER! Reshan is cool and then he just ♥♥♥♥♥ off and we never see him again which is sad.

Disclaimer
Dear reader, you have now entered the Brugaves and Erlina section. Anger doesnt begin to describe what I feel about these two... lets get into it.
Erlina: She just kinda never shows emotion, which we are led to believe was because her fellow Solstice Warriors got murdered, but then she just kinda goes full on megalomaniac, which is fair I suppose since now I think she got traumatized and is just insane. ♥♥♥♥ guys do I actually like her now... oh god.

Brugaves: So anyway this character serves zero ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ purpose, he doesnt even do the survivors guilt part well because moraine is RIGHT THERE! To add onto what i was saying he just stops being a character mid game because he just ♥♥♥♥♥ off after being like "lol lmao bye i will forget all now" and if we were gonna do that anyway he could like idk, as hinted at sometimes (he goes back and forth between feeling bad about betraying us and being like "I must do this") actually betray erlina and die in the process or something, that would make me actually say "Yknow what, he kinda didnt do much but he had some aura when going out.

♥♥♥♥ YOU BRUGAVESIMORE
So anyway because of the sheer amount of content the game has I can recommend it, Just dont go in expecting a masterclass in storytelling, the rest is actually pretty great.
I am sorry but please just play Chrono Trigger instead.
É surreal o carinho que os devs tiveram ao fazer esse jogo, cada detalhe e cada ação foi pensada no jogador, fora as semelhanças e easter eggs com o jogo The Messenger. A gente se sente tão querido.
Seriously, just buy Chrono Trigger. Don’t even bother with this. Don’t be fooled by the marketing and astroturfed praise. This was a boring, tedious slog of a game with very brief elements that I liked. I’m going to start with what was objectively good, as the general setting, artwork, and music were neat. Certain elements within these categories really mesh well that lend to genuine fun while exploring the world (the soundtrack changing based on the time of day, environmental puzzles based on new abilities you acquire, repetitive but charming animations from sprites, etc.). Cybirg ninjas and glass golems are just cool to have in your party commotion. But thats about it. The dialogue and story really drag this experience down for me. It insists that it’s not like those other cliché Jrpgs - “inspired” by the greats as the marketing says - but is simultaneously just re-heating Chrono Trigger’s nachos and being the blandest experience ever. It expects you to be invested for possibly 40 hours of gameplay, to be invested in one-note, stilted speaking characters that made me question out loud why I should care about anything that’s going on. Story pacing, character motivations, and a sense of real stakes were messed up, contrived, and just not present at all, respectively. I got so fed up with so many needless exposition dumps that I eventually just skipped cutscenes as the game went on. The ending genuinely pissed me off. FYI, there’s a “True” ending that also sucks and doesn’t make any sense if you think about it for more than a minute. I bothered to do all the side content here but ended up feeling apathetic about it all. Yeah, that how I wanted to feel after going on a grand adventure. Empty inside. As fun as the combat can be at first, it gets old quick, with many of the encounters becoming too repetitive. Point attribution when leveling up felt aimless and didn’t make me feel like experimenting. You are going to be using a lot of the same combos throughout, with some deviations for certain lock combinations. The locks btw are random, and often without enough turns to figure them out. It thinks it’s keeping you on your toes, but it just elicited a lot of disdain during certain enemy encounters (♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bird tribunal iykyk). Baffling that this costs nearly $40 for what you get, and what you get is just padding, both in story and gameplay. It’s honestly like this game just gives up three quarters of the way through and actively reminds the player that their time is being wasted. Please skip this and find something better.
