I have not enjoyed an rpg this much since Legend of Dragoon, so i plan on beating the game
Growing up with a Game Boy Advance and a PS1, I spent countless hours getting lost in JRPG classics like Legend of Mana and Final Fantasy. Despite the hardware limitations back then, those games were incredibly creative — in their visuals, their stories, and the worlds they built. You could genuinely lose yourself in them for hours. Sea of Stars brought all of that back. Sabotage Studio didn't try to copy any single classic. Instead, they took the best of what the golden age of JRPGs had to offer and carefully wove it together into something that feels both nostalgic and fresh. Some might call it a mish-mash — I'd call it a love letter. Without spoiling too much, there's a moment in the game involving sacrifice that genuinely moved me. I kept waiting for the plot twist. The magic elixir. The convenient save. It never came. And that hit harder than I expected. Because just like in life — if you're gone, you're gone. But it's your memory that lives on, and that memory empowers the people you left behind to keep going. The turn-based mechanics will feel immediately familiar to any JRPG veteran. But Sea of Stars earns its own identity. My only criticism is the pacing — it's a slow build. But I'll be honest, that's just me. For players who are story-driven rather than gameplay-driven, that slow burn might actually be exactly what they're looking for. I'd recommend this to hardcore JRPG fans and retro gaming enthusiasts alike. And if you're someone who's always been curious about the genre but didn't know where to start — this is a great entry point. It respects where the genre came from while being completely accessible on modern platforms. Sea of Stars reminded me why I fell in love with gaming in the first place.
great JRPG
