Caveat
I am writing this review for a friend, who kindly suggested this game. I must say that I am quite surprised by some of the negative reception, given that the game is free and sets itself as a specific iteration of "Hidden Object" genre. I find that the game does exactly what it posits; deliver an explicit investigative experience through a short, 3-puzzle game. It is clear that Male Doll is exploring a different genre for their future video games endeavours, and I am curious to see where this new direction will take the studio. If you are reading this, Male Doll, I would like to say that your games have a lot of potential (and are unique, so thank you for your efforts in this niche space), but their short nature makes them feel "superficial" at times. A few refinements and a few more hours of gameplay would truly make a difference, in my opinion.
Writing & Story - ★★☆☆☆
Raw Signal keeps the narrative minimal. You play as a “private detective” investigating a wild gay party, uncovering secrets and objects. There’s no deep plot or character arcs and you won’t be solving a mystery or facing moral choices; the “story” exists mostly to justify the over-the-top, chaotic environments. The game’s simplicity works for what it is, but anyone expecting a strong narrative will be disappointed.
Representation & Tone - ★★★★★
The game is unapologetically campy and explicit, leaning into exaggerated gay male fantasy. Its tone is playful, silly and cheeky, often absurd in a way that’s clearly self-aware. For instance, the "choice" that you make at the end of the game...
Representation is very specific: it’s focused on a particular type of gay experience; most likely party culture and explicit humor, so while it’s affirming for some players, it’s not broad or nuanced. If you enjoy cheeky, erotic and messy party antics, the tone will resonate with you. I am happy to add that the CGs contain a wide variety of men, showcasing an interest in representing different bodies and ethnicities.
Gameplay - ★★★★☆
Gameplay centers on classic hidden object mechanics. You click around crowded scenes to find objects listed on your detective “case sheet,” which ranges from mundane items to adult-themed surprises. The game is entirely single-player, free-to-play and levels can be completed relatively quickly.
A full playthrough would take 1 hour or a little more, depending on how fast you spot objects (I find that the last one or two objects are the most difficult to spot), making it a light, casual experience. There are Steam achievements tied to completing scenes and finding special objects, which prompts players to complete the game, especially if you are a completionist just like me.
Art & Direction - ★★★★☆
Visually, the game is bold and cluttered, with bright, detailed, over-the-top NSFW scenes. The chaotic visual style fits the party atmosphere but can sometimes make spotting objects tricky.
The exaggerated, sometimes ridiculous character designs and settings reinforce the campy, humorous mood, making it clear the game doesn’t take itself seriously (a typical trope for most Male Doll games).
Do I Recommend It? ★★★★☆
Raw Signal is a short, niche hidden object game that’s fun if you’re looking for something free, light and gay. It’s perfect for a quick, silly diversion, especially for fans of campy NSFW content. If you want depth, or lasting gameplay variety, it’s not for you, but for what it sets out to do, it delivers exactly what it promises.
