Friend slop? Sounds like yall need better friends. Solo or 2 player makes the game a lot more challenging so depends on what you want out of playing, maybe having difficulty modifiers (more enemies in the later levels, higher health etc) to account for having more people could be a good addition. Also having things like health upgrades healing you to full that are part of community made mods could be added to the game as modifiers would be good. Proximity voice chat is fun and the ongoing updates always add to the experience.
