Take out the Big Gun sounded simple enough, except the Strogg were waiting. You, and a few marines like you, are the lucky ones. You've made it down in one piece and are still able to contact the fleet. The Gravity Well, the Strogg's newest weapon in its arsenal against mankind, is operational.

This game is no longer on the steam store. Based on the reviews, I can see why. So this review doesn't really mean anything.
A considerably late continuation of my review series of the Quake 2 series of games starting from Q2 Remastered. I have stated before that Ground Zeroes is a marginal improvement over the Reckoning in the one area that expansion was lacking in which was the length. The level design and overall artstyle of this expansion is far superior and the new weapons added were also satisfying to use and rewarding to get the hang of. The story in this expansion is lacking as we are once again a Marine who crashes onto a Strogg facility, but this time it is volcanic! The pacing is what drives the game as the levels all feel snappy and not overly convoluted which was a mistake that the Reckoning fell into deeply. Fortunately there are not only Strogg bases only as we get more of the outside areas of the planet and varied locales within said mining facilities. The music once again is phenomenal and the new tracks fit the atmosphere of the game flawlessly, while still utilising the original games soundtrack as well. As for the difficulty, I would say this a far easier game than the Reckoning, but still harder than Q2 original which I have completed a Nightmare run of. As I am planning to revisit one of my favourite shooters on the hardest difficulty I will say, I am looking forward to completing Ground Zero over the Reckoning any time. Still, to complete the collection of Q2 reviews, last addendum is that the considerable love and care which went into the Remaster still resonates with me to this day, as with all boom-shoot remasters done by Nightdive in collaboration with ID, the quality that we can expect is nothing short of phenomenal. Even resurrecting the online scene for some of these games which is great to see! Quake 2 and all it's expansions is always my first choice to revisit and that has never been easier to do now, I implore everyone reading this to give it another chance, no matter what people might say on the Internet about these games I can confidently say that these are underrated gems of gaming history.

one hour in, and I am debating if I should continue or not - the level design is horrendous and it may just get worse from here
Levels are designed so poorly it's almost unplayable. Also Sentry Turrets should be nerfed or removed
Dont play this
Updated 5/8/2025: Steam's QUAKE update from ID developers is GREAT, and STILL fresh with the great new levels - [the first peek : ----------------------------------------------------- Wow, this looks great, and with some adjustment, I can get looking nice a gritty, and realign my mouse settings. I am grateful to those volunteers who sweated their pixels off to preserve my all time favorite game with greater detail without making it look like another anime, powder puff, mystical, magical fairy dusted, ultra-high-res, super modded lesbian robot vampire Steam Porn spectacular. This is the best of old school.
