PROTEST is an independently developed role-playing game created by CUTE ANIME GIRLS and published by Tranquility games. At first glance, it appears to be another modest anime-inspired RPG built with familiar tools and mechanics, but its premise gives it a slightly different identity. The game follows two young women attempting to stay together despite living in a society plagued by violence, intolerance, and unrest. While its themes are more ambitious than its presentation suggests, the experience remains grounded in the conventions of low-budget indie RPG design. The story carries much of the game's appeal. Players accompany the protagonists as they travel through an unfamiliar city, facing criminals, overcoming obstacles, and meeting a cast of supporting characters who help shape their journey. The narrative emphasizes loyalty and perseverance, with the relationship between the leads serving as the emotional anchor throughout the adventure. Although the dialogue occasionally suffers from uneven translation and simplistic writing, there is a sincerity behind the game's attempt to tackle ideas surrounding acceptance and human connection. It may not explore these subjects with great nuance, but it succeeds in giving players a reason to continue beyond the combat encounters. Gameplay is built around classic turn-based battles, where players use attacks, abilities, and magic to defeat enemies encountered throughout the campaign. Combat is intentionally straightforward, favoring accessibility over complexity. There are opportunities to experiment with different skills and combinations, but seasoned RPG fans may quickly exhaust the available strategies. Exploration follows a similarly uncomplicated structure, with players moving between locations, speaking to non-playable characters, and progressing through scripted events at a steady pace. The inclusion of Steam achievements and cloud saves adds a welcome layer of convenience, particularly for players who enjoy pursuing 100% completion. Visually, PROTEST embraces a colorful anime style that reflects its developer's body of work. Character illustrations are expressive and memorable enough to give the main cast some personality, even if environmental design and animations are comparatively basic. The soundtrack does its job without becoming a standout feature, complementing the game's lighter moments and more dramatic scenes alike. Production values are undeniably modest, but the title manages to establish a distinct atmosphere despite its limitations. Players accustomed to indie RPGs will likely recognize both its strengths and its shortcomings almost immediately. What ultimately makes PROTEST interesting is its willingness to blend personal storytelling with social themes while maintaining an unapologetically niche identity. It is an imperfect game filled with rough edges, inconsistent pacing, and mechanics that rarely evolve beyond their foundations. Yet there is an undeniable charm in its earnestness. Rather than attempting to imitate larger RPGs, it commits to delivering a small-scale adventure aimed at a very specific audience. PROTEST will not leave a lasting impact on the genre, nor does it possess the polish needed to stand alongside more accomplished independent RPGs. However, players who enjoy discovering lesser-known titles on Steam may find value in its unusual premise and heartfelt intentions. It stands as a reminder that even small projects can offer distinctive experiences, provided players are willing to overlook technical limitations and embrace their individuality. Rating: 5/10
I like it
This game is just confusing. Based on the achievements, I'd guess I'm about 75%+ of the way through, and I still have no clue wtf the story is supposed to be. The CGs are fine - but you don't get to actually see anything; it isn't being censored, it just something always happens to be in the way. The game is subject to errors with disturbing frequency. Between that, the shortness, and the *ahem* story (if there even is one), I can't recommend this. 2/10
