W Prehistoryku irytuje niewygodne sterowanie (i te skoki), a sama postać jaskiniowca z wielką pałą ubijającego wszystko dookoła jakoś nie budzi sympatii.
Prehistorik is a classic side-scrolling platformer developed by Titus Interactive and published on Steam by Interplay Entertainment Corp., offering a direct window into the design philosophy of early 1990s PC games. Originally released in 1991, the game has been preserved largely as it was, making it less a modern reinterpretation and more a faithful archival experience. It places the player in control of a ravenous caveman from the T-Bone Tribe whose only real motivation is survival through constant eating, a premise that is simple, humorous, and perfectly suited to the straightforward arcade sensibilities of its era. The game’s narrative is intentionally minimal, relying on visual comedy and implied context rather than dialogue or exposition. Your caveman hero journeys through a variety of prehistoric environments in search of food, using his oversized club to defeat enemies, break obstacles, and protect himself from the many dangers lurking across each stage. Health and survival are directly tied to consumption, making food pickups a core mechanic rather than a secondary collectible. This creates a tight gameplay loop where every enemy defeated and every risky jump is ultimately in service of keeping your character alive and moving forward, reinforcing the primal theme in a mechanically coherent way. Gameplay in Prehistorik is built around classic platforming fundamentals: running, jumping, and attacking with careful timing. The level design emphasizes enemy placement, environmental hazards, and vertical traversal, often requiring players to memorize patterns and commit to precise movements. Combat is deliberately simple but not trivial, as many enemies require multiple hits and can easily overwhelm careless players. Boss encounters punctuate progress and demand pattern recognition rather than brute force, offering moments of heightened tension that break up the regular flow of stages. While the controls may feel stiff or slightly imprecise by modern standards, they are consistent and readable, rewarding players who adapt to their rhythm. Visually, the game embraces a colorful, cartoon-like aesthetic that has aged better than many of its contemporaries. Characters and enemies are exaggerated and expressive, leaning into slapstick humor rather than realism. Environments range from icy landscapes to caves and forested areas, providing enough variation to keep the journey visually engaging despite the game’s relatively short length. Animations are simple but effective, clearly communicating enemy behavior and player actions, which is crucial in a game where reaction time and positioning matter more than complexity. The audio design is equally emblematic of its time, featuring upbeat, looping music and basic sound effects that reinforce the game’s playful tone. While the soundtrack is not expansive, it complements the visuals well and avoids becoming grating during repeated attempts at difficult sections. The simplicity of the audio presentation mirrors the overall design philosophy: nothing is excessive, but everything serves a clear purpose within the experience. Difficulty is one of Prehistorik’s defining traits. The game does not offer modern conveniences such as frequent checkpoints or adjustable difficulty settings, and mistakes are often punished quickly. This can make the experience feel unforgiving, particularly for players unfamiliar with retro platformers, but it also gives success a genuine sense of accomplishment. The challenge feels intentional rather than unfair, rooted in learning enemy patterns, mastering jumps, and managing limited health through smart food collection. For players who grew up with similar titles, this difficulty curve is part of the appeal rather than a flaw. Ultimately, Prehistorik stands as a concise and honest example of early platform game design. It does not attempt to modernize itself or add new systems to appeal to contemporary tastes, instead offering a preserved snapshot of a specific moment in gaming history. For retro enthusiasts and players curious about the roots of the platforming genre, it provides a charming, challenging, and occasionally punishing experience that values clarity, timing, and persistence above all else. While it may feel simplistic or dated to some, its focused design and playful personality ensure that it remains a worthwhile journey for those willing to meet it on its own terms. Rating: 6/10
A nostalgic game from the 90s childhood. Just don't die, because you can't save the game and then you start all over.
