I stopped playing VN's a while ago, and then PS2 sent me down the rabbit hole of replaying all of the VNs I own that are by Winter Wolves. 10/10, would try and speed run romances again - realise I can't break up with Cliff and just play the whole game again.
Recommended on sale for fans of the original. Some clunky systems and a strong tether to the first game may make it less approachable for newcomers, but for those familiar it is worth rejoining the cast. However, there isn't enough new or added to be worth full price expectations in light of some stumbling blocks. I would recommend you also check out Sunrider, Our Adventurer Guild, Magical Diary Wolf Hall, Sakura Dungeon, Serment Contract with a Devil, or Cherry Tree High Girls Fight that all have better polish on their systems. +Art style +Class/skills customization +Exploration, events, quests +Impactful choices +Continues the story where it left off +Some good music tracks +Character alignment, relationships +Save anytime +Turn-based battles +Some battle voice/barks +Auto battle option +Variety of weapons, armor, items +Choices on level up -Barebones options -Can't customize appearance -Lacking tooltips -Mouse only -Some hidden controls (H to hide UI) -No rebinding -Buggy, some error screens, UI/stat issues -Tutorial text info dump -Some areas lack any music -No voiced dialogue -Some sound effects are piercing -Poor volume normalization -Low quality battle voice -Lacking backstory for new players -Unclear what party members approve until after decisions -Awkward formation, battle, and equip UI -Unclear direction at times -Many equipment sidegrades, comparison difficulties -No skill use on auto -Severe MP (PP) limits skill use -'Chance to hit' is very inaccurate -Lacking/absent animations -Hidden speed up function (battle menu options circle icon) -No new party characters, similar story from first game -Some balance issues
Very fun game, and a good sequel to PS 1. Lots of different choices to make, different plot paths to pursue, (optional) romance quests, endings, and of course Achievements. A good marriage of RPG, visual novel, and (again optional) dating sim. For the dating sim part of the game, there's an optional censorship DLC so you can toggle off what you may or may not want to experience. The developer is friendly and responsive, and I had a lot of fun w/ the game. I didn't care necessarily for the backup (don't mean that in a cruel way) artist, though some subjects came out better than others. My only constructive criticism would be this game needs a lot of proofreading. Typos are somewhat rare, but grammar and syntax (and missing small articles & words) show up as infrequent issues. Not enough to ruin my enjoyment, but there's room for improvement there. Looking forward to another game like this from WW.
Finally I came around writing a review! Phew! ^^; I still can remember quite clearly how the first part of Planet Stronghold was also the very first game I bought from my own money, so the franchise holds a very special place in my heart. My parents were never fond of me playing video games and I had to sneak into the living room in the middle of the night in order to use the old family PC for it. xD Sadly though I guess I must've lost all of Planet Stronghold's game files during a backup/drive change. Still bugs me until this day. But enough with the storytime! On to Planet Stronghold 2! Which I was OF COURSE overly hyped for since its early, early, early announcement. Overall there is to say that it more than met my expectations. The storylines, the characters, the deepness, the gameplay - everything improved in a way that made me go O.O additionally to the nostalgia. I almost had tears in my eyes meeting all of the familiar characters again in such polished surroundings. Now some details I really love about this game: 1. The improved background stories of all the characters. Oh boy! I never thought something could ever make me like Rebecca, Michelle and Tom, but... yeah... it happened. I officially like all the characters from this game now. Achievement unlocked: High standards met! xD 2. The map exploration system with its beautifully drawn tiles. I'm always in when there's something to explore. Even more when I can cruise around in a cutesy spaceship. ^_^ 3. Alignments. It's always a plus when I can choose to be nice and friendly or a complete a**hole leader. On that note I'm also having fun with the friend/rival system for the characters. It gives the relationships and the game overall so much more depth. (No matter how I play though... I don't have the heart to be mean to Milo. :,D) 4. The character creation screen. I love variation and trying different combinations of skills. But well... who doesn't? x,D 5. Soot. 6. The amount of endings you can get! Until now I have unlocked two of them and I am already hyped to read the rest. 7. Slow building romance and relationship difficulties. I applaud that. 8. Overall nicely balanced combat system. I played on normal and never had the feeling the battles were too easy or too difficult. (Even though I have to say I am a completionist and usually grind a lot to defeat all enemies on the map. xD) 9. Emotions. I love this game for the variety of scenes. Funny ones, thoughtful ones, exciting ones, scientific ones (one of my favorites ^^), tense ones and even the sad ones.
I cried when Philipp sacrificed himself. I really did. He's one of my favorite characters and his backstory with Luxinde was so touching in its own way. (Even though her help in the last fight didn't do much... Argh! Three battles in a row! One day I will get that achievement! D: xD)
10. The remaining characters which you didn't choose to romance have... romantic relationships themselves. Some of them. Very late game. But I love it. It gives me such a warm and cozy feeling. <3 Overall I'd say... it's the best game by Winterwolves yet. Really. I mean it. GO BUY IT ALREADY! xD (And I really do hope the game market will change sometime in the future. There are NOT enough people appreciating SciFi and I DON'T want this to be the last SciFi game by Winterwolves. I just... cannot accept that. :,( ...I am still in need of a BxB alien romance interest after all. :,D) And now I'll go back to hunting achievements. xD
I played the first game a month ago and was disappointed about the writing and character development. Then I saw that a sequel was being released and I decided to give it a shot. No regrets, this game was so much fun to play, the writing has greatly improved, the romance scenes were lovely, the characters have been nicely fleshed out to the point where you get attached to all of them and even
Philipp's sacrifice really hit me in the feels. I was legitimately sad and I love the background story that was given to him.
Great game, good history and funny combat system. All you need!
Note : J'ai joué à Planet Stronghold 1 et Planet Stronghold colonial defence.
