Excellent game. Feels like it should be easy but it's frustratingly difficult!
Thousands of retro top-down shooters are infesting Steam, and "Piece Yourself Up" is just more pollution in a crowded market of terrible games. There are thousands of these on Steam (you can go see for yourself if you search for the tag on the store, I'm not kidding). And this is far from being one of the best of those. This top-down, pixel-art dungeon crawler where you slash and shoot enemies with spoons in a desperate attempt to reassemble your own broken robot body wasn't even made as a game for gamers. It was made for a game jam, which is a problem. It was done in a very short time, but professional game development takes years of effort from teams of talented people. A "game" slapped together in a weekend by an amateur simply isn't going to have any value for gamers and that plays out clearly with this shovelware. This is a tired, outdated experience from a tired, outdated and obsolete game genre. Just a couple of top-down shooters out of literally thousands have any appeal for gamers lately (Hotline Miami, etc), and I'd argue against those having much value for gamers. This is so much worse. This "me too" Steam Direct shooter in a crowded genre offers nothing new. It's "free", but free doesn't mean good. These jam projects are more about the developers ego than providing a fully fledged, totally complete game product. It is a movement that celebrates low standards over professional skill. When you let an amateur rush out a project just to say they finished it, not to be a game for gamers but because the developer is trying to win a "game jam award" participation trophy, the result is always going to be a mess like this. It might seem harmless for hundreds, if not thousands of these game-jam ego projects being dumped on Steam, but it's not. They take away marketing space that should properly be available to genuine developers who did the right thing and spent years making real, serious games for gamers. They make it harder for gamers to find those games... they pollute Steam with garbage people have to push aside when looking for genuinely made games. They give amateur developers and even worse name. All of this is bad for the industry, and bad for us gamers. The amateur pixelcrap visual presentation here at best could have been an attempt to use "retro" as a crutch, a weak excuse to avoid admitting the developer wasn't capable of doing the job of a game developer this decade and creating cutting edge, high quality 3D visuals. While a lack of skill or funding is the explanation for this failure, it's no excuse. The end result of this incompetence is a game that looks dramatically inferior to professionally developed games. Terraria and Undertale succeeded despite looking crap, not because they look crap. The developer chose not to do the job of a real game developer and create meaningful bespoke levels, narrative based gameplay progression and so on. Instead, they decided that "Procgen IS content!" and lazily tried to use procgen algorithms to create infinite, samey, repetitive, soulless levels, because that's a lot less work. As a result of this poor decision, the game gets tired and repetitive almost immediately. Developers must learn that procgen is a terrible substitute for creating real content. It should not be used as "ez-mode" for content creation, as the developer tried to do here. Let's talk about pricing and the actual value this has for gamers. This is "free" enough (not every "free" game in the "free" section is truly free, there's usually some hidden price tag), at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good, and the cost of a game is more than just financial, your time is valuable too. A peak of 4 concurrent players (according to SteamDB) for a "free" game is a disastrous public reception. Out of 130 million potential players here on Steam, almost nobody was interested. Even though this is "free". That level of rejection speaks a lot for the quality of the game. This "free" game won't count toward your game collection count on your profile. With that in mind, is it something you should still download? Nope. There's no up front cost here, but I still feel like I got ripped off, and I didn't even spend any money. That's how bad this is. There are over 140,000 games on Steam, not every one of them is a hidden gem. I'm here to help gamers find the ones that actually matter in that sea of Steam Direct self-published mess. If you don't agree with my findings in this review, you should definitely download it and play it to see for yourself. I'm happy to have helped you make an informed choice, regardless of the outcome. You deserve the best.
