I'll be honest, I am still struggling completely grasping all the strategy that this game offers, but I guess that is what keeps me coming back. The progression is well-paced, giving you a serious change to familiarise yourself with your phobies (i.e. the pieces in the game) before there are new ones thrown at you. That's why you truly feel like you are mastering your complete range of phobies and why, after a few games, you are sure to have the basics down. But with a high, puzzle-like skill ceiling, there is no real chance of getting bored easily. The only thing I am less enthusiastic about is the mmr, which jumps up with 40 points after a win, but only goes down by 10 or so after a loss. This led to me being forced into matches with people that outleveled me pretty quickly. I am also not a huge fan of losing all rewards when surrendering, especially later in the game, when a result either way is already clearly going to happen. Overall a solid 8.3!

nice game
Phobies, developed and published by Phobies Holdings Inc., takes an unconventional approach to the strategy genre by transforming humanity's fears into a cast of bizarre and memorable combatants. Rather than relying on traditional fantasy warriors or sci-fi soldiers, the game embraces an imaginative nightmare aesthetic where every creature represents a phobia, resulting in a world that feels both unsettling and playful. This distinct identity immediately separates it from other free-to-play tactical titles on Steam. The presentation leans heavily into its theme, filling battlefields with strange monsters, exaggerated animations, and environments that resemble a twisted corner of the subconscious. At its core, Phobies combines collectible mechanics with turn-based tactical gameplay. Players assemble squads from a roster of more than 180 unique Phobies, each possessing specialized attacks, passive traits, and movement capabilities. Team composition becomes one of the game's most rewarding elements, as success often depends on finding synergies between creatures rather than simply deploying the strongest units available. Some Phobies excel at controlling territory, others provide support or disruption, and many can exploit environmental hazards to swing battles in dramatic fashion. The result is a strategic experience that encourages experimentation and rewards players who invest time into understanding the strengths and weaknesses of their collection. The battlefield design deserves particular recognition. Matches are fought across compact hex-based arenas that place an emphasis on positioning and objective control. Every move carries weight, whether it involves claiming key points, setting traps, or forcing opponents into unfavorable positions. Environmental interactions add another layer of complexity, turning maps into active participants in combat rather than static backdrops. The game's pacing strikes a comfortable balance between accessibility and depth, allowing newcomers to grasp the basics quickly while providing experienced players with enough tactical possibilities to remain engaged over the long term. One of Phobies' standout features is its flexible multiplayer structure. Players can engage in asynchronous battles, taking turns at their convenience and managing multiple matches simultaneously, which makes the game particularly well suited for shorter play sessions. For those seeking a more competitive atmosphere, real-time Arena battles provide immediate strategic challenges that demand quicker decision-making. This dual approach broadens the title's appeal considerably, catering to both casual users and dedicated tacticians. Additional modes, including practice encounters and PvE challenges, ensure there is always an opportunity to refine strategies or experiment with unfamiliar Phobies outside of ranked competition. Progression is handled through unlocking, collecting, and upgrading new creatures, creating a satisfying sense of advancement. Seasonal content, recurring rewards, and leaderboard systems encourage continued engagement, while cross-platform support allows players to seamlessly transition between PC and mobile devices. Although the free-to-play model introduces monetization elements that can occasionally slow progression for non-paying users, the game generally remains approachable without requiring mandatory purchases. Its modest hardware requirements also make it accessible to a wide audience, ensuring that most players can enjoy the experience without technical concerns. Ultimately, Phobies succeeds because it fully commits to its unusual premise while backing it with solid gameplay systems. Its combination of collectible elements, tactical depth, and flexible multiplayer options creates a package that feels genuinely distinctive within the strategy space. While progression pacing and the inevitable challenges of maintaining an active online community prevent it from reaching absolute greatness, the game's creativity and replay value more than compensate. For players looking for a strategy game that offers something different from the norm, Phobies delivers an entertaining journey through the strange landscape of fear and imagination. Rating: 8/10
