Warning: Asset Flip! Philosophers Lab is a Digital Homicide style asset flip. The "developer" paid for/pirated a few Unreal Marketplace packs, got their hands on some public domain literature, dumped it all in a blender, and submitted it to Valve as if they're real developers.
This isn't a game, it's an incomplete art exhibition that's been dumped on Steam, presumably because the local art galleries took out a restraining order on the "artists" who had no other choice but to pay Valve $100 to dump this on Steam. But it's worse, because none of the "art" here is the actual work of this so-called "artist". It's here to abuse Steam Early Access as the "developer" tries to get paid for someone else's product. Two notable criteria for what makes an asset flip instead of legitimate use of stock assets are whether those assets comprise the majority of the work, and whether the "developer" properly credited the people who created most of the content. This product fails both of those tests. The "developers" here didn't credit any of the artists and real, actual game developers who created the assets here, so this is plagiarism, as well as cash grab shovelware. In this case, the asset flipper took a bunch of Unreal Marketplace assets, slapped them on a very basic Unreal first person blueprint, and dumped a few bits of other people's literature on it, to assemble an "art exhibition" made of other people's works. Nothing in here is the true product of the "developer", yet he wants YOUR money for OTHER PEOPLE's stuff. This is why we despise asset flippers. It has no value or merit as a real game, and it was never intended to be a game. Need I remind us all this is Steam, for PC games? And yet here is, effectively, stolen artwork and assets being presented as if they are the real product of this "developer", when it's obvious little, if anything at all here came from this person? And it's not even a game. For those unfamiliar with what actually makes something a game, a "game loop" describes the interaction and feedback a gamer has when playing a game. Tetris, for example, has a game loop where a random block appears, the gamer interacts with the block to position it, and then the game decides if that finishes a row or not, increases the players score if any rows were completed, then gives the gamer another block to position. Counter-Strike has a game loop where a player seeks another player, tests their skill against that player by shooting them or being shot, the computer rewards the player if they win, and then if the player survives, they repeat that loop. There's no loop here, no true interactive feedback. It simply is not a game, it cannot be "played". This feels more like a tech demo, proof of concept or student homework assignment rather than a fully fledged product designed for PC gamers. As such it doesn't offer any real value as a serious PC game. Taking this shovelware seriously as if it was a genuine attempt to make an interactive art exhibition, it doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this "borrowed" artwork will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the artwork impossible to interact with for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. In fact, there's no options at all for anything, including the crap audio track, which you can't turn off. These technical defects push this product below acceptable standards for any modern PC software. The poor quality of this product is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak user number was only 2 viewers. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. Another unethical act of this developer, knowing full well that this isn't even a game, and they didn't create most of the assets, they are deliberately trying to scam gamers into buying it by offering it on discount and selling keys to the game from third party key resellers. It's impossible to "accidentally" discount a game. The developer looked at their asset flip, and instead of doing the right thing and removing it from Steam, they instead doubled-down and tried to scam even more people into paying for it. Greedy, and completely unethical. Doing the wrong thing, on purpose, for money. This is not okay. You're forced to sign a highly questionable yet legally unenforceable End User License Agreement... for such a relatively low effort, low quality game this comes across more as a delusion of grandeur than anything else. This agreement includes questionable requirements that may attempt to revoke consumer law protections that gamers expect to have, which is also highly problematic. Developers must learn they are here to serve gamers, not control them. I had my cat walk over the keyboard while the EULA was displaying, which fixed that problem for me. This kind of asset flipping isn't harmless. It makes it harder for gamers to find genuinely made games from ethical developers. It makes it harder for genuine indie developers, who put hard work into trying to make real games, to find an audience for their products. It gives indie developers a bad name. So, should you buy this unfinished asset flip? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ products on Steam? Philosophers Lab has the gamer gouging price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the unethical nature of the developer. For comparison, the $5 asking price for this game could get you real, playable games like "The Witcher 2", "Mad Max" or "Batman: Arkham City". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.
Profile Features Limited! Valve have marked this product as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the product (to date). Until this status changes, this product will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this.
