The best Persona game (I haven't played the first 2) in my opinion. This game definitely has the most amount of uncomfortable and unnecessary scenes that you tend to see in these games (if you know you know) - I genuinely don't know why Atlus chooses to put some of the stuff that they do in their games. It's really annoying because their games are actually good. Anyways, the game's plot and characters (except Teddy) are definitely the best in the franchise, and I think it's a great refresher after having problems with that in the 3rd and 5th game.

Persona 4 Golden captures 2000s nostalgia incredibly well. Having previously lived in rural coastal Japan myself, the town of Inaba felt like a deeply comforting and accurate representation of that specific setting. At its standard $20 price tag, it's well worth every penny for the sheer amount of content you get, but if you're a bit on the fence about older games, it frequently goes on sale. If you're looking for a character-driven narrative, the cast of characters and the core friend group is where this game shines. My personal is Yukiko. Her laughing fits are entirely infectious. Though I also love Chie, because she's a certified badass. The chemistry and bond between the Investigation Team make the massive runtime fly by. Just in case you might be wanting to compare it to Persona 3, the central storyline here can feel like a bit of a weak point. The murder-mystery plot itself felt somewhat predictable, and I actually managed to guess the true identity of the killer pretty early on in my first playthrough. However, I don't think that predictability is necessarily a bad thing. The narrative focus feels less about a shocking "whodunit" and more about exploring the psychological parallels between the protagonist and the killer. It feels like examining different sides of the same cube, which keeps the themes engaging even if the mystery doesn't completely catch you by surprise. In the end, while the pacing of the plot has its flaws, the unmatched character dynamics and nostalgic atmosphere easily carry the experience. If you're looking for a cozy and substantial JRPG world to get lost in, I highly recommend spending some time in Inaba. <3
