Penumbra: Requiem fizzles out what the first two games had. It ends on a whimper -- it seems dislocated and unfinished, even though I know it is an epilogue. The gameplay leaves much to be desired from Level 4-5 onwards. The puzzles are boring and they no longer have that grounded feel from Black Plague. Instead of using a "manual" to concoct a cure for Clarence, you're scraping an electrified ball along the wall. It felt pretty "meh" All things considered. Still, it can only mainly go up from here.
Penumbra: Requiem

Shameless Puzzle-Focused Expansion

Definitely not worth trying
Penumbra: Requiem was the last official installment in the series and the one that deviates the most from the original formula established by the previous games. It completely abandons the survival horror elements, resource management becomes almost entirely irrelevant, and the game is reduced to solving physics-based puzzles, many of which rely on exaggerated and often unrealistic mechanics. If I had to describe this game, I would call it an experimental simulator designed to test the series' physics engine through poorly designed, counterintuitive puzzles and platforming sections. The game features environmental puzzles that can be solved through a variety of unconventional methods, many of which exploit the game's physics system rather than rely on intended mechanics or logical reasoning. The puzzles themselves are not particularly difficult, but they are quite tedious and time-consuming due to their excessive length and solution requirements. They also are poorly explained, making their objectives and solutions unnecessarily difficult to understand. This title retains the same visual style as its predecessor, reusing many of its assets and repurposing them for puzzle-solving and platforming sections. This expansion is divided into nine escape room-style levels, each requiring us to find keys and solve puzzles in order to unlock the exit. Also, there is no variety in puzzles, in most levels, we are forced to move and stack boxes endlessly to build bridges, towers, and makeshift platforms in order to pass each section. As for the story, it contributes almost nothing of value to the series. Instead, it concludes the series with a very disappointing ending that is not really worth reaching. Honestly,I found this expansion really difficult to enjoy, and even harder to recommend. It feels like they merely used the Penumbra name property to experiment with random puzzle physics rather than deliver a meaningful continuation to the series.

As a Game Dev - 7/10: This game is actually a really good for referencing ideas for puzzles to add to your own games and projects, theres alot of interesting and simple puzzle concepts that would be fairly easy to implament into your own projects too. As a Player - 3/10: This game being a few hours of just some lore and showcasing only puzzles and nothing else, theres no scares, no enemies just fall damage and hot steam...as a player stick with the other two Penumbra games, this just isn't Prenumbra, Its more an experiment to test puzzle ideas with the machanics or engine they used for Penumbra at the time. Overall, not a bad experience.
This is a spooky Themed puzzle game. Its NOT a good Horror game but its an ok puzzle solver. I always like games with a physics based puzzle system. Wish this was not the only real sequel to the Penumbra games.
Well this was a pleasant surprise. Having just beaten Overture and Black Plague, I had expected Requiem to be as if not more miserable. This game is a Penumbra game, (or a barebones Amnesia game), that ditches everythihng and focusses strictly on puzzles. I loved this decision, as it made the game actually fun to play. Sure it isn't scary and does not try to be like the previous but that doesn't matter because having this game put everything into puzzles, make the puzzles so much better than anything in the previous two games. This game is a nice breath of fresh air for this less than ok series of games. If you feel the need to play more Frictional Games, then this one is not a bad option. It is a very short but good puzzle game.
