Paul’s World, developed and published by Cloaz Studio, is an indie RPG that attempts to merge survival mechanics, crafting systems, and classic turn-based combat into a single open-ended experience. It carries a clear sense of inspiration from older role-playing games, offering players a sandbox where exploration and self-directed progression take center stage. While its ambition is evident in the number of systems it introduces, the overall experience feels more like a collection of ideas than a tightly integrated whole. The gameplay revolves around gathering resources, crafting equipment, and gradually improving your character’s ability to survive and explore. Players can engage in a wide variety of activities, including farming, fishing, mining, and cooking, all of which contribute to a sense of self-sufficiency within the game world. Early on, this variety is one of the game’s strongest qualities, as it provides multiple paths for progression and encourages experimentation. There’s a certain satisfaction in building up your capabilities step by step, especially when transitioning from basic survival to a more stable and productive routine. Combat is handled through a straightforward turn-based system that aligns with the game’s retro influences. Encounters with enemies require basic planning, such as choosing attacks, managing health, and equipping better gear. While the system functions well enough, it remains relatively simple throughout the experience. There are few mechanics introduced to deepen combat over time, which can make battles feel repetitive, particularly during longer play sessions. It serves its purpose as a progression element, but rarely becomes a highlight of the game. One of the defining aspects of Paul’s World is its open structure. Players are given the freedom to explore the environment and engage with its systems without strict guidance or linear objectives. This can be appealing for those who enjoy sandbox-style gameplay, as it allows for a more personal approach to progression. However, this same openness can also lead to a lack of direction. Without clear goals or a strong narrative framework, players may find themselves unsure of what to pursue next, especially as the initial novelty of the systems begins to fade. The various mechanics introduced throughout the game—crafting, farming, resource gathering—add breadth but not always depth. While each system contributes to the overall experience, they often feel somewhat isolated from one another. Instead of forming a cohesive network of interdependent mechanics, they function more as individual activities that support progression in a general sense. This can make the game feel unfocused, as it struggles to fully develop any single aspect into something more substantial. Visually, the game adopts a simple and functional style that reflects its indie origins. The environments and character designs are clear enough to support gameplay, but they lack the detail and personality needed to make the world stand out. The presentation does its job without drawing attention to itself, resulting in an experience that feels serviceable but not particularly memorable. Audio design follows a similar approach, offering basic feedback without significantly enhancing immersion. As players progress, the game’s limitations become more apparent. The lack of evolving mechanics and the relatively shallow depth of its systems can lead to repetition, and the absence of a strong endgame or clear progression path can leave the experience feeling incomplete. While there is enough content to sustain interest for a time, it does not build toward a particularly satisfying conclusion. Despite these issues, Paul’s World retains a certain charm through its variety and accessibility. It offers a relaxed, low-pressure environment where players can experiment with different systems and progress at their own pace. For those who enjoy casual survival RPGs and are willing to overlook rough edges, there is some enjoyment to be found in its sandbox design. Ultimately, Paul’s World is an ambitious but uneven indie project. It introduces a wide range of mechanics and provides a flexible framework for exploration, but it lacks the depth and cohesion needed to fully realize its potential. It can be engaging in short bursts, particularly for players who appreciate its retro-inspired approach, but it struggles to maintain momentum over time. Rating: 6/10

This is one of, if not the #1, absolute HARDEST turn-based RPG I have ever played. Every battle is a trial full of hardships and sorrow, but it's important to remember that no matter how dire the situation you can always "Paul" through. The game leads you on to believe that it will be simple and easy, only to subvert your expectations and throw the hardest, most ap"Paul"ling encounters ever seen in a turn based RPG right at you almost instantly. Death is a harrowing concept in Paul's World, as one wrong move could mean PERMANENT DEATH for Paul and his allies. Even if you take some time to do some side quests and play some minigames, you aren't safe, as the game has strategically implemented a feature into minigames called "bright, flashing lights", a technique learned and used by only the most skilled game developers of all time. It's not just Paul the game is picking a fight with, it's after YOU too. This is PAUL'S WORLD, we all just live in it, and I want out.
