scrabble with cards! its a lot deeper than that, but thats a very basic summation. there is a physical edition of this, and this version doesnt add too much QoL over it, but unlike Risk, you probably didnt know this was a physical board game until now, did you? unfortunately, this version is plagued with really strange design choices and bugs. play the physical version if you can (tabletop sim shill) but if you dont want to pony up the cash, this isnt the worst replacement.
They fixed most of the issues people who rated this below are complaining about in the intervening years. As it stands its a deckbuilder so intuitive and elegant you can get people who like word games more than stategy intoit :O

Nice competitive word game. I would consider it to be a 'cozy' board game. If you like stuff like Wingspan or Patchwork, you may like it. Grab a cup of coffee, or tea, and chill out playing a game or two.
Paperback: The Game is a deckbuilding wordmaking game. It's like Scrabble if you were collecting letter tiles to put in your own bag that other players couldn't use. The idea is good, the rules are a bit arbitrary and the theme of writing a bestseller is not well integrated. There's some strategy in choosing which cards to buy, but there's not much in the way of tactics - since all your cards are disposed of at the end of your turn, there's no reason to try to hold on to high value letters and hope to get a better selection next turn. It's just go for the highest scoring word every time. I haven't tried multiplayer, only played vs the AI, which is OK - it doesn't make the best use of card abilities, missing out on easy bonuses at times. Against that, the lexicon it uses has a lot of words I'd never used before, so I can't say I'm not learning new vocabulary - it's just not all that much fun. The gameplay just gets repetitive after a fairly short time. It's cheap and I would have enjoyed this a lot more if I was eight or nine. At the age of fifty, it's a way to pass a few minutes, and it is at least easy to dip in and out of every now and then. Overall, I'll give it a recommendation, but I'd suggest looking for some play footage before buying to make sure you know what you're getting.
Please update the dictionary in the game. Envigors is a word. envigor (third-person singular simple present envigors, present participle envigoring, simple past and past participle envigored)
The game became boring very quickly. You get cards and try to build a word with them in just one turn. Then your turn ends and you get a new hand of cards. Sometimes you get money to buy new letters, but what's the point when you only have one turn to use them? You aren't building on existing words and despite the title of the game, you aren't building a paperback. I don't know, maybe I don't get it. It's not fun.
Note: Dead PvP game This game contains no meaningful single player content. There's no viably populated servers/active player population. This game cannot be played as intended.

Warning: Third Party Account This game requires you to register on Paperback's cross-platform server... there's no valid reason for this in a PC game when SteamWorks is available. This is often done to harvest private data and profile you, with potential sale and transmission of your private data to third parties. The developers will probably argue that you can trust them, but if they were trustworthy they wouldn't demand you create a third party account. This represents a considerable risk to gamers due to the privacy and security implications of developers that wish to bypass Steam and harvest user data. Remember, sometimes if the product is free, YOU are the product.
This is a badly done conversion of a tabletop cardgame, basically you just take your time and use cards to make words and see who can make a crappy novel... and the answer is irrelevant because the online matchmaking is dead and there are no players. So, "Paperback: The Game" is a dead PvP game. Why did it fail? It's video game autopsy time! Almost every PvP exclusive game on Steam fails. Only a tiny proportion of them "go viral". This game failed for many of the same reasons those others fail. The chief of which is the developer thinking that their game will "go viral" without actually creating any reason for it do so. Competition amongst PvP centric games is extreme, and there's only a finite player base to appeal to. This game failed to reach any kind of critical mass and died as a result. Let's go into some of the reasons this particular game failed to appeal to gamers, despite the zero up front cost. First and foremost, there's no meaningful single player content. The developer gambled that other players would be an acceptable substitute for adding storytelling, level design etc to the Game. They lost that bet. Without a huge community of players or single player content to add a lasting value to the game, the game dies. Developers must learn that other players are not an acceptable substitute for adding content to a game. For gameplay purposes, because the user interface for this game is mostly just 2D static text/images... it might as well be a web page. It's functionally no different from a browser game. And we all know, Steam isn't here to compete with Chrome and Firefox. If the game can be done in a web browser, it's just not rich or compelling enough to appeal to serious gamers on PC. The game features really lacklustre 2D visuals (does the developer not know 3D graphics became mainstream in the mid-1990s?). Gamers don't spend thousands of dollars on gaming rigs and the latest 3D graphics cards to play 2D games. Even mobile phones and game consoles can do 3D graphics now. There's no excuse. This game is fairly dated at 8 years old... and even back then it looked old and busted compared to contemporary, professionally made 3D games of the same period. It looked bad then, it looks worse now. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. There's no initial download price, but the developer was charging $5 USD for this. Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It seems like a nice gesture for the game to have no up-front cost anymore, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. This is also a bit of a slap in the face to anyone who showed enough questionable judgement to pay money for this... nobody got refunded. All other issues aside (any of which would disqualify this from being worth your time), this is a game that relies on other players for it to be viable, and because there's not enough players, it's not viable. I can't recommend anyone downloads this, it's basically dead.
