OVERLORD: ESCAPE FROM NAZARICK

This is a fun, but short, metroidvania game where you get to go throughout all of Nazarick. It's soundtrack is baller and the game has some simple enough formula anybody could play it. If your a fan of the Overlord series this is a fun game to try out! My advice would be to wait till it's on sale as it's base price is a little high for how short it is... -Overall fun game, sasuga Ainz-sama!!

My favorite parts of the game: 1) Difficulty achievements do not stack. So I can be forced to replay my favorite parts of the game 2 more times at a minimum. 2) The absolute nonstop "freeze the gameplay so some stupid animation can play out" that plagues the entire final third of the game. This is truly what every action-focused game needs, and the fact that more games don't do this is terrible. 3) You pay mana for the opportunity to pay more mana, but it's random if you get to pay mana 1, 2, or 3 times before you need to repay mana for the opportunity to pay more mana. 4) "I didn't see that spike come out from the floor because the camera never panned down. After going through a whole bunch of buzzsaws, I naively assumed the death traps were done. Now I get to redo the whole thing all over again." It's one room. You know if you know. 5) I love 8 million weapons that are all worse or weaker than what I currently have. I love magic that is weak so as to only serve to solve puzzles. 6) Everyone knows how infamous Mega Man X6's level design is. Everyone hates it. And yet everyone continues to draw inspiration from it when making platforming-puzzle levels. Mega Man X6 is my favorite game.

I don't really play many metroidvanias, but I enjoyed this game. It's a nice little trek through an expansive dungeon, taking on various boss monsters as you clear each section. I wouldn't consider the game to have much depth or be very difficult, but it's fun for what it is. If you're a fan of the Overlord series and not adverse to the game's genre, then it's an easy sell. Otherwise, you can probably do better. In terms of gameplay... -The combat: During bosses, is very fun - definitely satisfying to learn the attack patterns and master dodging to take them down. During exploration, it's nothing to write home about - most enemies in the game are very weak and plentiful heals mean being sloppy isn't punished. -The platforming challenges: are perfectly fine I'd say. They're mostly simple, though occasionally they require more careful movement. I'm not sure how I feel about the mace that you grapple off walls with though. I might just be bad but the mace feels pretty wonky in this game. -The exploration: solid. The game's world isn't very huge, and progression to the normal end is very linear, but there are tons of optional pathways you can take if you choose to. I always love exploring game worlds and collecting treasure, so this is an easy win for me. Though, disappointingly, the in-game map is partially broken, so you can't rely on it if you're trying to go for 100% exploration. Presentation wise... -The sprite-art: very nice. I'm not an artist so I can't go into detail, but I'd say the game looks quite good. -The music: solid. Most tracks aren't incredible but there are a couple I really like. -The story: nonexistent. The story is uninteresting and the script feels phoned-in. Luckily this is easily ignored and doesn't detract from the experience. Overall I'd say this game is fairly good. Definitely not mediocre, but not quite great either.

Never seen the Overlord anime. Most of the mechanics are janky or are straight up pointless. There is some fun to be had in cheesing the game by abusing a late-game ability. The music is good. The game is alright, but it lacks the metroidvania sauce. Definitely not worth buying at full price.

If you enjoy both Overlord and Metroidvania games, then this is a solid purchase. It's far from a perfect game, but it's fun and the writing cleaves very nicely to the original series. However, if you haven't watched Overlord, I would strongly recommend doing so before you play this game. The game just drops you into the middle of one of the climaxes of the first season, with no explanation at all as to what's going on. This is largely not noticeable if you've only watched the anime (or just aren't a huge Overlord nerd). [/list] [h2]Mixed[/h2] [list] [*]Rather linear: while there are some locked or hidden areas to go back and explore later, the game itself is very linear for the most part. This makes it good for a more casual experience (or a good entry point into the Metroidvania genre), but loses a bit of the depth of the genre defining games such as, obviously, Metroid and Castlevania. [/list] [h1]Conclusion[/h1] I greatly enjoy this game and fully recommend it. Contrary to other reviews, I think this game is worth $30 for the content and length of the game (I'm only maybe 50% done as of writing this review). Combined with replay value in achievements for every difficulty, and the general fun of exploring, you're not buying a small or unpolished game here. I have a feeling that others who judge it as worth less than $30 are basing that solely on its Indie vibe, rather than on the actual length or depth of the gameplay. After all, it's not like this game is $60 or $70 like a major release would be.

This is a fine metroidvania, albeit a fairly linear one. All the normal bells and whistles are here. Start weak but get more power ups as you progress, find secrets and optional powerups to strengthen yourself yada yada. It's pretty cool. movement and combat isn't so far off of sotn except your base movement is definitely faster and platforming gets more of a focus. Notably the sprite work is really good. If you're a fan of the show I say give it a shot. Not for $30 though. Wait for a sale. This game is only worth maybe $15 bucks.

Pretty generic Metroidvania-style game using the Overlord IP. It was straightforward, and nothing really stood out to me. I will say that having to do separate playthroughs on Easy, Normal, and Hard to get 100% was annoying. I beat Normal first, assuming it would unlock the Easy achievement as well, but I was wrong... So if you're going for 100%, be prepared to do 3 playthroughs. (6/10)
