Orange Cast: Prologue by Team Rez and Valkyrie Initiative is a short, self-contained introduction to a larger sci-fi project, designed less as a complete experience and more as a preview of the world, mechanics, and tone the full game aims to deliver. From the moment it begins, it presents itself with clear ambition, placing you in the role of a futuristic soldier navigating hostile environments while hints of a broader interstellar conflict unfold in the background. It is immediately apparent that the developers are aiming for a cinematic, story-driven shooter that draws inspiration from established science fiction themes—corporate power, military conflict, and mysterious forces beyond human understanding. The structure of the prologue is straightforward and linear, guiding the player through a sequence of combat encounters and scripted moments that introduce the core gameplay. Movement and shooting form the backbone of the experience, with the player advancing through levels while engaging groups of enemies. On a basic level, the mechanics are functional and easy to grasp, making it accessible from the start. However, as the gameplay continues, the limitations become more noticeable. Combat lacks a strong sense of impact, with weapons feeling lightweight and movement lacking the fluidity needed to make encounters feel dynamic. What should be intense firefights often come across as routine exchanges, with little variation in how situations unfold. Enemy behavior contributes to this sense of repetition. While there are different enemy types, their actions tend to follow simple patterns, and encounters rarely require significant adaptation. Instead of encouraging strategic thinking, the game often relies on placing multiple enemies in the player’s path, creating a challenge based more on numbers than on complexity. This approach can make combat feel predictable, especially as the prologue does not introduce enough new mechanics or variations to keep the experience evolving. Where Orange Cast: Prologue shows more promise is in its attempt to build a larger world. The environments, though inconsistent in quality, suggest a universe with scale and variety, ranging from alien landscapes to industrial structures. There are moments where the game captures a sense of atmosphere, using lighting and environmental design to hint at a broader narrative beyond what is directly shown. Cutscenes and scripted sequences further reinforce this ambition, aiming to create a cinematic feel that ties the gameplay to a larger story. The narrative itself is one of the more intriguing aspects, even if it is not fully realized. The game introduces elements of corporate intrigue, military operations, and unknown threats, suggesting a layered story with multiple threads. However, the delivery is uneven. Dialogue can feel awkward, and the pacing of information is inconsistent, making it difficult to fully grasp the context of events. Rather than building a cohesive narrative, the prologue presents fragments of a larger story, leaving the player with an impression of complexity without the clarity needed to fully engage with it. Visually, the game sits in a middle ground between ambition and limitation. Some environments and moments are visually striking, especially when the game leans into its sci-fi aesthetic, but these are offset by inconsistent textures, stiff animations, and a general lack of polish. The contrast between its more impressive scenes and its rougher elements highlights the gap between what the game is trying to achieve and what it is able to deliver within its current scope. Audio design follows a similar pattern. The soundtrack fits the tone of a science fiction setting, helping to reinforce the atmosphere during exploration and combat. However, sound effects and voice work are less consistent, occasionally feeling disconnected from the action. These inconsistencies can break immersion, particularly in moments that are meant to carry narrative or emotional weight. Technical performance is another area where the game shows its limitations. Issues such as uneven frame rates, minor bugs, and unrefined animations are present throughout the experience. While these problems are not severe enough to make the game unplayable, they contribute to an overall sense of roughness that is difficult to ignore. As a prologue, some level of technical imperfection is expected, but it still impacts how effectively the game can present its ideas. The short length of the experience reinforces its role as a preview rather than a standalone product. It offers just enough content to introduce the setting, mechanics, and narrative direction, but not enough to fully develop them. This brevity works in its favor by keeping the pacing relatively tight, but it also means that the game ends before it has the chance to build momentum or leave a strong lasting impression. Ultimately, Orange Cast: Prologue is defined by its ambition. It clearly aims to deliver a cinematic, story-driven sci-fi shooter with a sense of scale and narrative depth, and there are moments where that vision is visible. However, the execution falls short in several key areas, particularly in combat design, technical polish, and narrative clarity. It succeeds as an introduction to a larger concept, giving players a glimpse of what the full experience might offer, but it does not stand strongly on its own. For players interested in indie sci-fi projects or curious about the direction of the full game, it provides a brief but informative look at its potential. For those expecting a polished or fully developed experience, it will likely feel incomplete and uneven. It is a game that hints at something bigger and more refined, but as it stands, it remains a rough draft of a more ambitious vision. Rating: 5/10

Jerky graphics, even though they look pretty good. Game mechanics don't work consistently, it's a chore to play and no fun therefore, and this after 20 minutes or so.
Before I played Orange Cast: Prologue, I had a small pp, no friends, no gf, depression, and no life. These things havent changed, but the game is pretty good
