Juegazo. Oh, me vengo
Great combat. Great characters. Great fun. Looking forward to perhaps doing a Carnage run.
8/10 Pros: It's Onimusha. Combat feels simple but is rewarding as you learn enemy patterns. Just when I felt close to getting bored, new skills/ weapons unlocked. It's rewarding when parrying, countering and of course the Issen attacks. Looks great. Particle effects and sword swings look beautiful. Facial animations are some of the best I've seen in modern games. Now the Cons that dropped it 2 points for me. While combat can be fun the enemies are dull and outside bosses are just fodder to grind. Even on carnage difficulty enemies just rush you and then wait for you the first few seconds to initiate the fight. There's 2 mini bosses that are fun the first few times you fight them but after the 5th encounter it just feels like filler to pad the runtime. Overall gameplay is great during combat, especially with bosses but outside that it's just running around back forth collecting random stuff ala ubisoft style. It'd be nice if side missions unlocked skills or attacks like ghost of tsushima or if rescuing all the lion dogs rewarded you with some kind of lion themed weapon/attack or maybe gave you a steady source for powerups with each group rescued. Sound wise the music is underwhelming and we really didn't need the marvel movie esque banter during and after combat. After about an hour I switched from English to Japanese audio because the posh British accents were throwing me off. Would've been nice if the subtitles were actually translating what was being said. instead of just throwing the English script on screen. Story. This is a hard one for me. I liked the overall story and without spoilers it's a unique shake up from the original trilogy and dawn of dreams but would've been nice to see it use Musashi as a character more. To see some of his real life opponents show up as juiced up genma fueled bosses would've been nice. As an elder weeb I watched the original Samurai Trilogy, read Vagabond and while I'm in no way an expert of the man I feel more could've been done outside of an offhand reference to a boat oar (iykyk) and him using the 2 sword style once. I hope they do more with the character if they make more onimusha games. Overall this is a great reintroduction of the series. It's a change of pace from a market bloated with souls like games. If you're a fan of Onimusha and want a good action game with rewarding combat, this is an easy recommendation.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword — 9/10 After 25 hours of gameplay and completing all the side quests, I can confidently say that Onimusha exceeded my expectations. The combat is easily the strongest part of the game. The animations, swordplay, parrying, Issen attacks, and overall feel of every encounter are incredibly satisfying. What I enjoyed most was how the game rewards aggressive play. Instead of constantly backing away from bosses, I could stay right in their faces, keep attacking, and rely on well-timed parries to maintain the pressure. It genuinely made me feel powerful. There is some repetition in the combat animations and boss encounters, but the core gameplay is so enjoyable that it never significantly affected my experience. I do wish there were more unique bosses, though. The story is good, but not exceptional. However, the ending left me interested in seeing where the series goes next. My biggest criticism is the limited freedom. I wanted more flexibility in exploration, skill progression, and character development. The skill system could have been more intuitive, and movement between previously completed areas should have been faster. I also felt that healing could have been more effective and straightforward. That said, I appreciated the simple difficulty options, and the game consistently kept me engaged throughout my playthrough. Final Rating: 9/10 An excellent action game with outstanding combat. I would absolutely love a sequel that builds on this foundation with more exploration, deeper progression, and greater boss variety. Recommended.
Awesome game, probably my GOTY so far for 2026. The combat and animations in this game are top tier.
Solid gameplay and a lot of fun on the full playthrough. I played through on story mode and found it to be very enjoyable.
What an amazing game, it gave us one of the most satisfying combat system ever. In addition to CINEMATIC boss fights that are done in a perfect way. There are couple of negatives in the game but I still enjoyed it. Onimusha: Way of the Sword .. 8.5/10
